WHY DO I NEED A FILTER ?

I'm getting the gastric bypass done & I'm nervous as all hell.My sexy date is on 3-10-08 but I have to do the pre-admission test,so I'm curious about that as well.Can anyone help me with these question. #1.Why must we be inserted with a filter ? #2.WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN DURING THE PRE-ADMISSION TEST OR WHAT SHALL I EXPECT?

Hello, I don't know what your doctor does on his pre-adminsion test but most run blood test and get family and personal history's. just trying to find out if there is anything that may cause a problem during surgery. The filter is because the doctor is concerned that you may get blood clots during or after the surgery. The filter will help stop the clot before it becomes a problem. Hope that helps you. Take care

Edmund is right about number 1 and it being because the doc doesn't want you know have and blood clots break loose which could possibly kill you. and I know that my doc had me do an upper gi exam x-rays and blood work to make sure that there isn't anything wrong along with making sure that it will be an easy surgery so that there isn't anything up for suprises. Filter? do you mean a drain? The drain is to see if there is any leakage, the day you are release from the hospital they give you water with green dye on it, if they see any green on the drain then that means there is leakage. My pre-admission test consist on talking to the anestesiologist (i think that is how you spell it, lol) also, you will be given tons of paper work, such as living will, consent forms, etc. and last but not least a pregnancy test (if applicable). my preop was just blood tests, an ekg on my heart to be sure cause i hadnt had one in a couple of years, and a pee test to be sure i wasnt pregnant or whatever. They didnt mention any filters or drains nor did I drink any colored fluid at any point before exiting, each doctor is different in what they require for surgery apparantly theres lots of reciepies for WLS LOL

my pre-op was paper work, blood work, chest x-ray, ekg, pulmonary function test (because I'm a smoker) I know ugly habit!LOL urinalysis, and medical history. My surgery is on the 28th. I also am nervous as hell, and worrying about the post- op pain.
