Hey everybody, I am kinda new to the community and am planning to have surgery in the near future. I was overwhelmed with questions and challenges from an elder (who have never been obese) about surgery. I love her and trust he a lot, but she really made me question my decision. Do you have any insight about surgery and Christianity or whether or not having surgery says that you do not trust God? Please respond and do have a great day.

If you know in your own heart that this is the right decision than, go for it. Does your surgeon have any support group meeting you can go to? If so, perhaps invite you friend to go with you so she can learn more about the surgery before judging it, you or your faith in God. Or bring your friend to meet your doctor and let him speak to her. When I made my decision, I didn't share it with many people (but in a big family word travels fast) I knew in my heart it was the right choice for me, but didn't want to get into a debate about the risks involved. I simply told people that I was just researching it for now, and didn't really want to discuss it further. Once they understood from my non-verbal cues that I wasn't going to give them any more than I wanted to share, they backed off. Now that the surgery is all said and done, the same people who were skeptical, are very supportive. I still have one relative that cant stop asking me questions or shooting negative comments. I know realize it's her own insecurities that she's projecting on to me. I just have to shrug it off and hope she can come to terms with her own self. Good Luck! It was the best thing I ever did for myself.

Thank you Joanne! That is exactly how I was feeling. She gave me some literature today, but my mind is made up. Thank you for your time and I believe that this is the best thing that I can do for myself as well.

You have to do what it right for you and not let input from others who have not walked in your shoes matter. This is YOUR life. We put our faith in God every day when we get out of bed and go about our day so who is this person to invoke God's name when it comes to having surgery. Don't let negativity drag you down. Take a positve attitude and have faith that God will carry you through this. If this surgery is meant to be, then it will be. Otherwise, obstacles will be placed in your way. Please don't let this person bring you down just because they are uneducated about weight loss surgery. There will always be at least one person in every crowd like that and you just have to say thanks for your opinion but this is my life. Sandi

You do what you need to do for you and your health. Being overweight is a sin if that's the case. I been a christian all my life my grandfather was my pastor, and we attend chrch on a regular. I feel great about my decision and everyone who tried to talk me out of getting surgery are now asking me questions, and researching for there own benefit. My suggestion to you is not to share with anyone else, other than us here who understand. People can be jealous.

Hey Cynthia, You are so right. People can be jealous and afraid of who you may become without the weight. Thank you for the insight. Best wishes to you!

Tracey, I am a christian. My father is a baptist preacher (now retired). I decided on the gastric sleeve. All the other comments have been great but I just want to add one thing. You will get your own answer from God when you pray. You will either feel PEACE or TURMOIL. If you feel peace than that is your answer. No one can question it. God speaks to us through our hearts. I prayed to God about my frustration with my weight (His temple). Within that week God led me to 2 people who got the lap band - both Christians. I went to 2 seminars and chose the sleeve instead of lap band. But I feel God answered my cry by leading me to these two people. Take care Christine 11 days since surgery.

Reading all these comments, it is so true. God will give us our answer in some way. Just keep your faith. Best of luck.
