Anyone else on a liquid diet pre-op? Share your experience
I am on day three and doing okay. I picked up a wide variety of acceptable items which really helps. I also noticed that a little broth or soups (anything warm) seems to satisfy and fill me a bit longer. Another thing, I don't really like Carnation Instant Breakfast drinks but I found that if I put it in the freezer for about 30 minutes to an hour it gets slushy and is actually good that way.
Just wondering how everyone is coping on their liquid diet and see if anyone had any tips.

i used to eat the dry hot cocoa powder. get sugar free nestle cocoa packets, empty one into a cup and just eat it with a spoon, dry. be careful not to inhale while you are putting it in your mouth though or you can kind of inhale the powder and cough. but other wise it tastes good and feels like you actually ate it and not drank it.
I'm on day 7 of my liquids. It's not bad. I'm allowed cream soups as long as I strain them and make them with skim milk. That helps a bit. Protein shakes keep the hunger at bay. I have to go clear liquids 2 days before surgery. Not looking forward to that one!! I hate the liquid diet, but I know it's not forever. I've been looking up recipes for when I can eat real food again. My husband says I'm torturing myself, but it passes the time and reminds me why I'm doing this.
This time next week we'll be in the hospital!! Never thought I would be happy to say that! LOL
Day four wasn't too bad. I tend to get REALLY hungry around time to get off work. Good thing is that I don't have to do any cooking for my family. They are on their own (just husband and MIL). I come home and usually have some broth (warm stuff seems to satisfy and fill me up), a crystal light and a sf jello. Later on before bedtime (yeah, I'm a night snacker), I will have more jello and a sf popsicle. I find that I need to consume something about everything three hours or so to keep the stomach from growling. Overall, I think I am doing good. Better than I expected actually. It sucks but isn't killing me like I was sure it would.

I'm a bit nervous - my surgery is scheduled for next monday (Feb 25th) and neither my doctor nor the nutrionist (which is on the doctor's staff) told me to be on any special diet except "clear liquids 24 hours in advance & nothing after midnight"
In fact - I have a big dinner party tonight (16th) & then one next Saturday (23rd).
Now I'm really nervous!!!

I finished my pre-op liquid diet last Saturday (I had clear liquids Sun and my surgery on Monday). I used Slim-Fast Lo-Carb (which I can only find now at Wal-Mart) and I used Atkins shakes. I didn't care much for the Carnation either. I bougth some Swanson Vegetarian Vegetable broth which I found to have much more flavor than the beef or chicken. I combined my starch and veggie each day which was the highlight of my day. I had 1/3 cup hummus and I dipped raw baby carrots into it. I had this with some broth at meal time so I could sit at the table with my family.
I drank lots of Crystal light and I found myself going to bed really early so the days would go by quicker. I am a Diet Coke-aholic and have been for 25 years so I spent my two weeks trying to deal with the heartbroke and loss of my BFF Diet Coke.
The two weeks went by really fast...surprised me too.

I had to do a liquid diet 2 wks prior and 4 wks after surgery. Like you I found that anything warm helped me out. Also SF fudgicles and popsicles got me through the rough spots. Otherwise I was also surprised at how well I did during that time. (I think I was successfull because I knew I was jepardizing my surgery if I failed). I had gastric bypass on Sept 10, 2007.
You sound like you're on the right track. Keep it up, it's worth it in the end! Good Luck!
I have been on the liver shrinking diet for a week and a half. I have a great deal of problems with it. I have been light headed several times and have gotten ill twice. I think the sugar may be to much in the slim fast drinks. I have actually felt better skipping the slimfast at lunch. I have also had to eat more vegtables and an extra piece of fruit from time to time. Surgery date is 2/26. I am nervous but excited.
Does anyone know if it makes a difference (the diet) if it is an open vs. laproscopic procedure??
