Congratulations to you on all of your weight loss success! (and your hubby too!) I had RNY on 2-20-07. I recently passed my one year anniversary and have similar situations to yours. I have very little food restrictions and I feel like I tend to graze at times too, which is very scary as I do not want to slip back into old habits. I'm hoping not. My weight loss has slowed as well. I'm down a total of 177 pounds. My highest weight was 362.. 349 day of surgery. Now I've been sitting at 172-174 for about a month and a half.

Wow...You were 380 on surgery day too. I knew we were in the ball park together but that's on the same plate!!! So, your on synthroid too huh. I've been on that since I have had the thyroid removed. Starting tomorrow I will be on something called Cytomel which is a short acting thyroid hormone and will be on that for 30 days. Then I go off everything for 2 weeks and on a no iodine diet. Then I will be admitted into the hospital for 2-3 days for radioactive iodine therapy. Hopefully that will kill all remaining thyroid tissue. My lymph nodes will have to be watched carefully cuz they do have cancer in them too but were not sure if it's a lot or just a trace at this point. I'm hoping to lose a bunch of weight on the no iodine diet cuz it's so restrictive but ya never know with me it could go the other way! I'm sorry to hear about your kidney disease. I lost my brother who was only 35 to renal failure. He was also a brittle diabetic. I can completely sympathize with what your going through. Are you on dialysis or a transplant list?? The doctor who performed my surgery was John Penning's with Surgical Bariatrics NW in Post Falls, ID. I live in Spokane, WA. Like you do about your surgeon I think he's the absolute best. His abilities along with great support staff made it a very good experience for both me and my husband. We both had RNY on the same day and had it done laproscopically! Our recovery time was about 3 weeks. We were doing pretty good after about 2 weeks but stayed home the extra week to try to formulated a regime with our new eating schedule. Well, talk at ya later! It's been really nice talking to you! Leslie

Thank you so much Leslie for emailing me--that is nice of you--yes we do have alot in common hey! I also was 380 on my surgery day 2/6/07! i started out at 448--and lost 68lbs before surgery--ad now i am down 115 lbs since surgery a total of 183 lbs-- Boy you are doing better than me!! I still have 67 lbs to my goal of 198 as i am tall and that is a good weight for me my prime doc thinks.. And i like you just want to have a weight that has a 1 in the front of it!! I have a slow thyroid and take Synthroid 125mcg--I am sorry to hear that you had cancer and had to have your thyroid out--I pray that you are cancer free now.. I also have diabetic complications and I battle Fluid retention from my kidney disease so it makes it hard as i can gain 10-15 lbs overnight in fluid--gets so frustrating sometimes.. i will add you to my friends list OK Add me too and we can help each other and encourage one another.. God Bless SUSIE Smith from PA ps--where did you have your surgery?? I had mine in Danville PA at the Geisinger Medical Center--I am a little upset as my surgeon left and went back to NJ where he used to be--But i am thankful that he was here for a few yrs and did my surgery as he is one of the best--i had open RNY by Dr Peter Benotti talk later

Hi Susie, I was impressed by your blog and even went to your site and read all about you. I'm new on this site and am enjoying reading what everyone has to say. I really can associate with you though it seems more than anyone else that I have read on. Your weight and mine were very similiar. My highest weight was 468. I lost about 35 pounds on my own and then at consultation with the surgeon I was at 433. Then he had me lose 50 prior to surgery, which somehow I managed to do and got down to 380 on my surgery day. Now I'm at 252. I feel blessed to have gotten this far along but really want to get to a weight that has a "1" in front of it. I will take anything in that range. The last few months have been tough though. I got news in 11-07 that I had thyroid cancer and since have had it removed. I still have to go through the radiation and have been very stressed. I've been eating emotionally and not dieting at all. I've only managed to lose 20 pounds since I found out about the cancer in Nov. I'm pretty dissapointed in myself for letting it get to me like this. But I will keep trying to plug along. I just wanted to let you know how much I can identify with you and that I'm proud to see how for you have come. Keep up the good work and if you ever need support please feel free to contact me!!!! Best Wishes, Leslie

Congrats on your wonderful success Charlotte!!! It sounds as though you are very happy and much healthier. My journey is still very much ongoing. I have a minimum of another 50 or so pounds to lose and had surgery on 2-26-07. I am struggling right now with emotional eating and grazing on the wrong foods. I have every faith I will get it under control especially as summer hits but right now am fighting the depression that goes along with dissapointment in myself and the lack of willpower. Hopefully reading everyones blogs will help inspire and create a better emotional environment for me to move forward. I'm new on this site but am really enjoying reading all that everyone has to say!!! Best Wishes, Leslie

Hi Melinda... I'm new on this site and just posted my story a few minutes ago. I know it's been a while since you posted. How are you doing now?? I too and probably more than you can even imagine understand what your going through. I have been on a plateu for quite some time. My last weigh in with my doctor was in 11-07 and I've only lost 20 pounds since. I've been going through a bout with cancer which has stressed me out beyond belief and I think I'm eating to deal with it. It's possible too that I'm using that as an excuse to eat but either way the results the same...EATING! I'm not even sure I have any great advice for you because I havn't dealt with the issue yet myself. I'm grazing, I'm eating junkfood, not taking my vitamins loyally, not exercising. It's like I've given up but yet I feel inspired everyday to turn it around. But then I don't and get discouraged again. My recommendation for you is what I did the other day. Go to a support group in your area that's ran by a real counselor. In person support groups can be very inspiring and a counselor can have lots of good information to help get you out of your funk. I walked away feeling pretty good and inspired. Everyday is a new day to turn it around. That's what you and I need to remember and the basics of gastric dieting. I have so much good information, I just need to follow it!

Hi everyone.... I had RNY on 2-26-07 with Dr. Pennings in Post Falls, ID. I weighed in at 433 when I had my consult. I had lost about 35 pounds right before that on my own. My highest weight that I know of was 468. Dr. Penning's asked that I get off 50 pounds prior to surgery. I managed to do so but not an easy task when you havn't had the surgery yet. My husband and I actually had RNY the same day and were in the same hospital room together. We both weighed in at 380 on surgery day. We didn't have any complications from the surgery and recovery was about 2-3 weeks. We are both doing well now. I have lost down to 252 which is a 181 loss from my consultation weight and a 216 pound loss from my highest weight. My husband has also lost similiar weight. We feel great and can't believe how much being overweigh impacted our lives and mental stability. Life is new and we feel like we are getting a fresh start. I would say at one year out my biggest struggle is stress eating and grazing. I can eat more and do not have many food limitation. It's more responsibility pn me to make the right choices. a recent hurdle has been that I found out I had cancer of the thyroid and had it removed this last month. I'm looking at some radiocative iodine therapy and possibly more surgery. It's a very stressful thing to deal with and eating is how I have been coping. I found out about the possible cancer in 11-07 and ever since have been so stressed out. I had been religous with all the do's and dont's of gastric dieting but have managed to neglect everything I've learned for the past few months. I've only lost 20 pounds since 11-07 and that's discouraging. Thats only 5 pounds monthly. So, I'm going to get through the radiation then try to pick up the pieces again! Not sure how but I'm hoping summer will inspire me too. I really want to get down to any number with a 1 in front of it!!!! Leaving you on a positive note....I would like to pass onto anyone reading this that I am so very happy at the choice I made and never one day since surgery have I regreted my decision. Both my husband and I were on sacks of medicines and our health was failing quickly. Now he's on no meds and I'm not on very much. We want to do things all of the time, our romance has been kicked up several notches and we see each other in a swing together when were 80. We certainly couldn't do that before. I'm grateful to my surgeon and his office staff who I would recommend even to people that are way out of his area. Sometimes you need to travel further to get quality!! Thanks for listening.... Topic: 13 months out-Has it been that long?
Well a year has come and gone.....and so has a 135 pounds. I started this process at 310 pounds and I am now at 175 ponds. I feel like a new person. I went for my one year check up yesterday and got a clean bill of health. So far what I have seen of my labs all looks good. Even my iron that was low at the 6 months visit, is good. I am recovering from spinal fusion surgery that I had on January 31st. Becasue of the problems I've had with my back I have not been able to exercise since October. So the only weight that has come off has been on its own. But just as soon as I get the ok to from my back surgeon to exercise again, it's back to the YMCA. Hopefully I can start losing a little more. I have 25 pounds to lose to reach my goal. But even if I reach that I still wouldn't mind getting down to 125-130. But I would be happpy with 150. I don't want to look unhealthy. I can't believe how much healthier my life is because of this surgery. My medications are almost nothing, my medical problems are almost nothing, my blood pressure went from high to almost to low, I'm not sick with common colds all the time like I used to be, I just feel better. This was the best decision I ever made in my life. I would do it again in a heart beat. I hope no matter how much everyone has lost or not lost that they are happy with where they are and who they are. This surgery has brought me and my husband closer. I am able to do things with my kids now and enjoy it, and they are not ashamed of me. I am so lucky for everything I have and for the wonderful family that I have. Good luck to everyone on your journey and keep up the hard work! Charlotte
