3 weeks out of surgery and eating too much?
Is anyone else having this problem? I can eat much more than the 1/4-1/2 cup that I am supposed to eat, I can actually eat a plateful of soft food. I went to a transition class today, and everyone else was tlaking about not being able to eat more than a 1/4-1/2 cup of food. I am able to drink 64 oz of fluid per day without issue? I weighed in and only lost 4lbs since 3/6- I had surgery on 2/26. I feel like I have ruined my entire surgery!
I was the same way for the first few weeks as well. I felt like I could eat anything that I wanted and wondered if they really even did the surgery. lol Well it changed and I wouldn't eat a whole lot more that what you are suppose to only because it can stretch your tool out. I drink all day and won't eat, I definitly get my fluid intake. The difference it I can't eat fattening foods or sweets they make me sick. So while you maybe able to eat alot, is there things that make you sick to try or smell. You are only 3 weeks out so I would be careful with what you try. Good LUck

Im 5 weeks post-op and I am having the same issue. I can eat pretty good at this point. I lost 40 lbs. in lil under 4 weeks after surgery and now have stalled or rather flexuate within 4 lbs. up and down for over a week now =/ I heard RNY patients dont absorb anything but carbs pretty much, I hope thats true cuz I have been getting ALOT of fat grams with my protien drink daily. Lemme know what you find out, I would be curious to find out if this is normal or are we doing something wrong =/

I am in the same boat. I'm 15 days post op and have been able to eat more food then I thought I could. It's mostly soup, but I can get in about a cup and a half with no problem. I've lost 13lbs and wonder if I'm doing something wrong as well. I have a three week post op appt next week, so I'll be asking a lot of questions.
I also am eating about 1 cup - 1.5 cup per meal to the point where I feel full. When I hear what others eat, (support groups and such) I feel like I'm doing something wrong too. But I know that when you add up the calories of what I'm eating, its still well below what I was eating before. And way healthier too. A cup of soup versus a "cup worth" of french fries is a world of difference. Certainly alot of it has to do with the swelling going down in the stomach. Hopefully you have regular access to your nutritionist and a follow up appointment with the surgeon soon so they can help you track the process.
Keep your chin up. The surgery is a tool, there's alot left up to you...just remember that confidence is your best friend.
Hey Pam, I noticed you had LapBand on 2/26. I had it on 2/21 at Brigham & Womens. Just curious as to how you are feeling. I can finally sleep on my stomach and have pretty much been able to eat almost anything as long as I chew it well. I have been following the weigh****chers point system to keep myself in line. Are you counting calories or following a physician's diet? I go for my first fill on 4/10.
I'm doing ok Debra, thanks for asking. I was really pleased that my post-op pain was mild (especially in comparison to my hernia surgery a few years ago.) I was able to sleep comfortably in my own bed after 5-6 days on the recliner. My surgeon's instructions would have me on mushies thru 30 days, but my nutritionist is encouraging me to move on to solid foods chewed well. I'm really reluctant to eat "real foods" just yet. Though what I have tried I'm doing well chewing and keeping down. Honestly, I'm afraid to find out that I can eat what I want. I've never been especially great on disciplining myself. I do well keeping the junk food out of my house but portion control is a difficult issue for me (and fast food too). I don't want to push the envelope. So I'm eating about one "solids" meal a day and mushies the rest right now. I lost 25lbs pre-op, then 20 lbs the first 2 weeks, but nothing since then. I plan on adding exercise in this week. I kind of feel lost in this gray area right now, but I know that's normal. I look forward to my follow up appointment with the surgeon on 3/28/07.

I'm new at this, so bear with me if I goof up. I also had my surgery on 2/26 and I was thinking that they messed up. I haven't felt full yet. I've only been eating the recommended amounts though and I've lost 30 lbs. This week has been especially tough. I thought that most issues were successfully dealt with during 6 mos. required counseling. NOT SO!!!! Today when my kids visited and brought pizza, I actually chewed up a little ( and spit it out ). I'm really missing texture and something that isn't SWEET. Most of the things that are on my list are sweet and that never was a favorite of mine. It's to the point that I gag when I try to drink them. Anybody have some support or ideas about this? Thanks in advance.
I am one month post op from the RNY surgery. I was really hungry when I was on soft foods and could eat a little more than what they had said. I could drink more too, the thing is ...all liquids and soft foods go through your new stomach faster so you are getting more in. What you need to do is measure out what you are eating and stop. Let the food sit there for a while and let your body absorb the nutrients. I hate not being able to drink til 45 minutes after that either. It has been getting easier this week and I am getting the "full" feeling. Just stick to your diet and let your stomach heal and you will be fine. I had to really be hard on myself to change and control my eating habits! I feel I can eat alot more but thats where we come in, we need to change our habits, like one of the others said...This is a TOOL, and just as with anything that you buy, it comes with directions and we have to learn how to use it. You guys are doing GREAT and you ARE succeeding! Keep it up and follow your Dr's direction and it WILL get easier! Your going to LOVE the new you!
