It is also very hard to stay up on my water and liquids...I know this is all probably normal but I was just hoping someone had some great ideas for the gas issue...sorry if TMI. Anyway, I am sleepy so I will check in with you all tommorow!

Hi,
I'm only 2 weeks post-op and I know jsut how you feel .I had the same problem as you did with the gas. I just made sure that I walked as much as possible around the house...and that would really help ALOT with the gas. And as far as the liquids it get better as the days pass you see that your fluid intake will get better.
Welcome home! I had the same problem with gas, and the best way to ease the pain is by walking. I got out and walked to the end of my street atleast 3-5 times per day in the first week after my surgery and it helped, but I really didn't start feeling "better" until after I was able to have my first BM.

I agree with Lori, walking will help get rid of it.
Also, don't use straws! That is the worst thing you can do if you are. I made that mistake the day I went home and I felt horrible and really bloated from the gas. I stopped drinking out of a straw and felt 100% better since then. I also used gas x but I'm not sure it helped at all. They have gas x strips that you can dissolve on your tongue like breath strips now!
Hiya Mariam-
Congrats on your surgery! I'm so sorry you have the gas pains..it does get better..just takes awhile! I did many laps in the house I have a computer chair that has a massager in it too. I did both..it helps. I was really sore after my surgery but felt better once I passed it. Just keep walking. Don't get so concerned with getting everything in..it's impossible in the beginning. Eventually you'll get it. I still have problems at times getting all my supplements in. I disagree with the last post. Some docs discourage straw use but mine didn't and I use them. It helps me with getting everything in..especially with the protein..'cause it stinks! If I don't smell it..it's not as bad. Hope this helps..Good luck and CONGRATS on your surgery again
Mariam,
My Dr's advice was that I should have a BM within 24-48 hours of surgery. After my release from the hospital (a little more that 24 hours after surgery) they gave me some Milk of Magnesia to help me go. That still did not help so 24 hrs later I was told to take a second dose. That also did not help so I called the Dr. and they said the first BM is very important and to go to the phramacy and buy the Soda phos. which was VERY nasty and drink half the bottle. I did that and within 2-3 hours I finally went. That was about 3 1/2 days after surgery. I would say if you have not gone yet, you should call your surgeons office and let them know. It's imperative that you go because it's proof that everything is functioning properly. Even though you are on liquids you will still have some sort of output. I hope that helps.
(we always talk about poop on these boards... )
