Hey I'm home from the hospital

Hey friends and fellow losers! I had my surgery on Tuesday the 28th also known as Mardi Gras which means FAT TUESDAY. Next year we will have to find another name for it. I wonder what the French translation for Skinny Tuesday would be. HMMMMM? My doctor called me his poster child for WLS. He said the surgery went perfectly, he couldn't have asked for anything better. So that makes me very happy and proud. I have had managed pain but the gas is a killer! LOL. It took two days for mine to start coming out and it is still a slow process. Anyone have any suggestions as to how to get it moving out??? I was eating ice the day after surgery and sipping the water from the melted ice. I kept feeling like I was having a big air bubble caught in my "tummy". Everytime I would take a sip it would feel like air was trapped. Finally, my hubby (*****ad my manual the doctor provided me) told me to sip on room temp or warm liquids instead. Sure enough no more air pockets each time. I still get the air pockets but usually because I take too much air in with my sip sip sipping of water. I am retraining myself on this process. It is going well. Today is my first day at home and I haven't had the success I had hoped in getting protein in. Water is no problem. But my doctor has me on a 6-8 week liquid/pureed diet and the shakes are yummy but tend to give me quite a bit of gas on top of what I already have - so it's not so much fun. Anyone have any suggestions on how I can get more protein in these next few weeks? I can only walk around the house right now due to still being a bit weak from surgery but feeling stronger everytime. Sleeping in the recliner was wonderful - with a pillow at the small of my back to pooch my tummy out was the most comfortable for me. I didn't move at all last night (drugs helped too lol). I look forward to feeling even better as the next week progresses. I would love to hear from any of you as to how you are doing. If anyone has questions about my surgery I am an open book. I so very much appreciate all the input and answers I got prior to my surgery and would love to pay it forward. Great to be on the bench with you winners! jean

Sounds like you're doing great, Jean. I had my open RNY 3 weeks ago (I was a poster child too according to my doc...lol). Unfortunately protein drinks are the only source of protein while on liquids. I was only getting in 30-40g on average per day until yesterday. Now that I can eat refried beans and cottage cheese my numbers are in the 70's. I was told the most important thing right now (at your stage) is to stay hydrated. Drink tons of water. Try varying your protein supplements so you don't get bored. Talk to your doc for more help if you're having a rough go of it. Are you allowed to take Gas-x or Beano yet? That will help with the gas. Gas-x has a chewable form.

We are rny twins. how neat. I also am sleeping in recliner. and am having trouble with the air bubles when I drink. I find it easier to drink smaller drinks. I am drink a half spoonfule at a time. I am verly getting in water. and have no ideal how much protein I am getting in. It is hard with the protein. So far the only thing I like it CIB. I bought Vanialla whye desinger from walmart and that is so gross. I dont even want to attempt it again. I am also weak. looks as if we are on the same place in the road. good luck and keep in touch. love marie

Congrats Jean! I also became a loser on 2/28/06! Woo-hoo! I'm not having too much trouble with water and gas. I think I'm getting enough liquids in. My protein is coming from Isopure Icy Orange Protein Juice (can't tolerate the shakes right now). It has 40g so that is at least helpful. I've quit the drugs and am managing with rapid release tylenol, so far so good! I think I am still getting rid of all the fluids they pumped into me at the hospital - my fingers and toes looked like little sausages when I left and now they are getting back to normal, thank goodness! I look forward to following your journey and seeing the transformation! All the best and praying for a speedy, uneventful recovery for ALL of us! Kim

Welcome home! Sounds like you are doing great. I had my Lap RNY on Feb 28th too (looks like it was a popular date ). I'm having some pain on my left side but other than that am doing pretty good too. I use Unjury (www.unjury.com) for my protein shakes. I got chocolate (of course!) and it's honestly as good as any chocolate shake I've ever had! It may take some trying different ones to find one you like. You can get sample packs at vitalady.com site. Take it easy and congratulations! Diann

Hi Jean, Glad to hear your surgery went well and it sounds like you are having the same issues as most of us are. I had my Lap RNY 2/27. I had ordered a sample pack from Bariatriceating.com. It has helped because it's given me a lot of different brands of protein to try. I found the IDS Banana was actually quite tasty and the Matrix 5.0 Perfect Chocolate was very good also. The Nectar Lemonstand Lemonade is also good. Of course, this is my taste. I know a lot of the brands other people have said they really liked I couldn't tolerate, so its really an individual thing. I just ordered the ones I liked. I went to my first post-op appointment yesterday to get my staples out. I lost 22 lbs! I coudn't believe it! I'm ususally the slowest loser when dieting. Hang in there and keep in touch! Kathy
