Just Wondering
I've been thinking since I had the surgery; most of us have basically had the same type of surgery, but our diets are different. How does a surgeon determine what you can tolerate and what you can't? I just read one thread where a lady is on pureed foods after four days out. Now I'm pretty sure that I can handle some sugar free applesauce, however, I can't have that for another 15 days. And another lady was eating mashed potatoes (can't remember how far out she was, but it was very far). I think I can handle mashed potatoes. What gives?
Essindy, I have no idea how the surgeons determine their diets for their patients but I have noticed how varied the stages among us Feb. losers. There are people who out of surgery 2-3 days post-op can have creamy soups, etc. and other's who have to be on clear liquids for 7-10 days, and yet other's can start eating and testing their pouch's tolerance/reaction to foods.
I guess the surgeon does what has worked for their patients in the past. As far as my surgeon he has us do: clear liquids(1-6 days), full liquids(6-10), soft foods (10 days to 6 weeks), and firmer consistency foods (6-12 weeks).
So yep, its confusing...but I'd rather stick to what my surgeon wants just to be on the safe side.

I had pre-op instructions from my surgeon to have 30 days liquids, 30 days of puree, then 30 days soft and mushy ... when I was in the hospital I got different instructions from every farting person who came in the room. I was one day out and some resident was like, "You aren't eating? You SHOULD be eating pureed and soft". I told him flat out he was NUTS and I was not eating anything I wasn't comfortable eating [gosh, my insides were still freshly sutured!!!].
The PA on the surgical floor gave me one set of instructions, the residents told me other things, the nurses said something else, the covering surgeon said another ... I was in pain, fresh out of surgery, on narcotics and my HEAD was literally SPINNING!
I told my surgeon what happened at my 1 week follow up and he was just like, 'They mean well.' Holy COW! I just want a straight answer.
I also found my WLS buddies from February all have gotten instructions, and well, I decided I can't keep comparing myself to everyone else. I decided to stick with what my surgeon advises because he's had other patients have great success. Yah, I still check in to see what you all are doing, but I totally get that it's crazy there can be so many different opinions and rules.
In a few months we'll all be in the same place anyway, right? xosm
