I, too, have a DATE!

Been lurking here for a few weeks since approval and have learned so much. My surgery date is Tuesday, Feb 28th. I have all my pre-ops done the Wednesday before on Feb 22nd. I am not sure what this entails(apparently I am scheduled for an Upper GI test, then I meet with my surgeon and nutritionist). If anyone can tell me about an Upper GI or what will happen when I meet with my surgeon that would be great. I have not heard anything about a o2 sat test for me. My pre-op appointments are supposed to last the entire morning but that includes an 1 1/2 to go eat breakfast after the GI test (apparently can't have anything to eat after midnight before). Any advice or information you can give me would be great. I can hardly wait to be on the losing side with ya'll!

My date is the day before you, so you will be in my thoughts. I go on Monday the 27th. I had my upper GI yesterday. It is an endoscopy - they give you a sedative (light anesthetic) and put a scope down through your esophagus and into your stomach to make sure there is nothing wrong with your stomach (like ulcers or cancer). If there is anything wrong, they biopsy it. If not, that's it, they wake you up. It is painless and quick. 15 minutes from start to end. They do it because they leave the rest of the stomach in and if they don't check it and something is wrong, that would be very bad. Anyway, congrats on your date! I am also very excited and nervous at the same time. I am getting a living will together just in case and all that stuff. But I expect everything to be fine. GOOD LUCK!

Congratulations on your date. I had an endoscopy (upper GI) as well. Like Jennifer said, they give you a sedative, so you don't remember anything. They just look at the inside of your stomach and duodena. My surgeon ordered a biopsy with mine, and it came back fine. After you wake up there is no pain... it is a very quick and painless test. Good luck with your surgery!! Hugs, Deanna

I had an endoscopy done in November. They found three ulcers in my stomach and h-pylori bacteria. They did a biopsy and it was negative for cancer so I just had to have an intensive two week treatment of antibiotics (1000 mg of Biaxin, 2000 mg of Amoxicillin and 60 mg of Prevacid each day for two weeks). After the antibiotics were done the doc had me continue with the Prevacid although now I only need 30 mg once a day. This pushed my surgery back a little bit, but better safe than sorry. I had a follow up done earlier this month and everything has cleared up. (My surgery is scheduled this Wednesday.) H-pylori seems to be common in a lot of people, so if they do find it you'll just need to take some antibiotics for a little while. Good luck to you!
