Protein Bars!!

When ever I eat a protein bar I get a tummy ache! I still can't eat a whole bar but after a few bites my tummy starts to hurt....it's like a quizzy feeling. I've eaten Power Crunch bars, Atkins Advantage, Pria bars, South Beach bars, they all have the same affect on me. Besides the sugar, what other ingredients might make me feel this way?? It's crazy because protein drinks had the same affect on me. I guess it's not ment for me to consume this stuff....my body wants real food Sylvia

Hi Sylvia, wow that kinda sucks that you get sick off protein bars & drinks because we need them so much. I'm thinking maybe its the milk product in them? Are you lactose-intolerant? That's my guess besides the sugar content. If you can get your protein from real food-it would probably be better and taste better too!! Elisa

Hi Elisa, I never was a protein drinker, I only did it because I had to but after about the 6wk mark I didn't supplement any of my meals, its been strictly food I've become a little lactose intolerant since surgery so that might be it. Sugars don't bother me and the protein bars I've had don't have much sugar in them, so it must be some sort of milk product in them. Who knows it's just wierd that I can eat everything except protein bars and protein shakes My body doesn't like fake food.... Sylvia

Hi Sylvia, How are you?! Well to answer your question, I get my protein from real food. I haven't touched a protein bar or shake since 6 weeks post op. My doctor said that our bodies respond better to the real deal. I eat alot of soy nuts, edamame, sushi, and shrimp and feel great! I've been eating more fruit and salads also. I had the same issues you did with the bars and shakes, that is why I stopped. Guess what? I weighed today and am I'm so excited, I'm 201 pounds now! People actually have started calling me slim, LOL! It helps to be 5'7" I think. I'm down 68 pounds since my surgery date 2-9-06. I'm so grateful to be where I am today. Eat real food!!!!!!! Rebecca

Yeah, I eat real food too but sometimes when I'm running around it would be convenient, especially for breakfast to just grab a protein bar and run out the door. I don't drink protein drinks either haven't had one since about 6wks out....I hated them. But other then that I'm doing great....down 66lbs, can't complain This Thurs is my 4 month mark and I'm so happy and I feel great! Congratulations on your loss....you seem to be doing great! Sylvia

Hello, How about something different? Power protein cookie, 27 grams of protein. I eat it slowwwwwly, a pinch at a time, over a couple of hours. How about protein cereal or snacks from kay's naturals? They seem to average 9 grams of protein and 12 carbs, with several different flavors to choose from. How about Stalone's protein pudding? Non dairy, 4 flavors, 100 cals and 20 grams of protein. How about microwave pork rinds. Sure, it's not a complete protein, by itself, but you can eat a whole protein within an hour to complete the protein chain, and count it all. Crunchy and disolves easily.
