Make sure you drink!!

Hey guys...I know you all know this, but this is just a reminder to what can happen if you don't drink enough fluids-which I still struggle with doing. KIDNEY STONES! Yes, I have had my second bout with them since having surgery (I never had them before). I had to have surgery this past weekend to have one removed that was causing a blockage in my ureter. As if the stone wasn't painful enough, I had to have a stent placed in me that goes from the kidney to the bladder and it caused a whole new set of pain! Thankfully it was removed yesterday, and I am starting to feel better now. My urologist told me that unfortunately because of the bypass surgery I could be prone to chronic stones. He said along with not being able to drink as much fluid as I can, that because of the re-routing I probably don't absorb the fluid as proficiently as before. SO...my new goal is to DRINK-DRINK-DRINK! Also, I was wondering, for those of you that do drink the right amounts...do you still sip or can you gulp? No matter how thirsty I am I still have to just sip. Any more than a few sips at a time and I feel like it might come back up. Also, is anyone drinking diet soda or anything like that now? Thanks! Sheila

Sheila, sorry to hear about the kidney stones, I've never had them but I've heard the pain is almost unbearable. Remember the importance of water to keep things flowing. I can't gulp like I could as a pre-op but I can definitely drink more than a sip at a time. My daily goal is to drink at least 80 oz of liquid a day, mostly water but sometimes tea or crystal light. I don't drink diet drinks, my surgeon said after 6 months it's ok but to not make it a daily habit, more of a "treat". I've tried it and I don't like the way it makes my pouch feel, even after letting it sit for 30 minutes or so to lose some of the carbination. Dana

I can chug about 1/4 of a 20 oz water bottle at one sitting. I'm a chugger lol. I have not had one soda since before surgery - I honestly don't miss it. I just drink water and unsweet iced tea. Keep gettin in those fluids! Kia 5'9" 284/167/155

First...I offer my condolences...I, too, have had a kidney stone since surgery (but I have had them before). My latest surgery for them was about 3/4 mos after my RNY. It was more painful than my kidney stone surgery back in 95...they used some type of method with a laser...and it hurt the moment I woke up..and the first time I had to urinate I thought I was gonna die!!LOL I have had a stint both times. I think I have another one...I've been getting the same pains again...but I will wait until it gets bad. As for drinking, I can gulp as much as I want....doesn't bother me at all. I do drink diet sodas..but try to go easy on them. I do tend to drink them if we go to the bar...I use them for mixed drinks. None of it ever bothered me. Donna

Thanks everyone for your replies! I have been doing a lot better on my drinking...I tentatively tried gulping a few drinks of water and found that I could do it! Today I ended up back at the hospital with more severe kidney pain. They checked my labs (they were fine) and gave me a back of fluids to flush the kidney...apparently there is some residual blood and stuff there from the stent that was removed Wednesday. Hopefully this will clear up soon. While there I was also told the weirdest thing. Since losing weight I have been freezing all the time-I figured this was just from losing so much of my insulation...lol..anyways, when they took my temperature, it was 95.4 degrees! Hypothermia starts at 95 degrees! How weird is that? They said it was unusually low, but since it was an oral reading didn't seem too concerned. No wonder I am always cold...I'm a human ice cube! Brrrrrrrrr, Sheila
