What are you eating?
Hi everyone. Just wondering what everyone else's daily diet is like.....what do you tolerate well? what do you love? what makes you want to I have noticed that there are so many different things that the md's tell us....I mean, mine said 4 oz at a time was okay....others say 2 oz. Mine doesn't want us to eat any meat except poultry and fish until 6 months out....others I have noticed are already talking about eating beef. Some full liquids are allowing more than I thought...such as mashed potatoes and stuff..... Just curious....
I'm on the "full liquid diet" - when I get full I stop. I see my dr on Thursday, and I think that at that time I will get the go-ahead to progress to a "soft-moist" diet~~ricotta and cottage cheese, scrambled eggs with a little cheese in it. Yes, everyone seems to have a different protocol. So far, I am tolerating the liquids, the protein shakes, jello, cramy soups, pudding, ice pops, water and flavored water drinks. I am looking forward to having something more solid, though. Some cottage cheese (which I have always loved) sounds heavenly to me!!
How are you doing? Hugs to you, Sara
Hi Sara....my 2/28/05 buddy. I go back for my first post-op appointment on Thursday the 10th too.....and I believe that the foods you mentioned are the foods that I will be advanced to as well. I have not tried pudding....but would like to uuummmm....for some reason, it never dawned on me that I could. My mom stopped today and bought hot and sour soup for me....of course all I can eat is the broth, but it has been heavenly....I am so tired of cream of chicken or cream of mushroom soups....
Have you had much nausea or vomiting? Only a couple times for me...but that was sure enough! I am having a terrible time getting my water in. About 30 oz a day sometimes not that. Have you weighed yet? I have not....I got rid of the scale a long time ago...I am interested in finding out if anything has been lost. I can't tell that anything is different yet.
Thanks for replying Sara...and very nice to meet you. Good luck on your journey.
Hello, Lori. I have a little book that tells me what I can have when. No, I haven't been sick or nauseous. I can get my liquids in OK. I do feel full right now as I've had a protein shake. I'm SICK of the creamed soups, too. I am going to call the dietician @ the hospital and ask her about starting on some cottage cheese tomorrow. It IS soft. I'm not sure if I have lost or not. I weighed myself the other day and it looks as though I have, but I'll wait and go on the dr's scale.
Try the sugar free instant pudding - it is very good.
Take care~~Sara
I had the Duodenal Switch (DS) so I can eat whatever I can tolerate. I've been eating frozen dinners, hamburger, tuna, beans, chicken wings, mashed potatoes and cheese, Underwood Deviled Ham on wheat toast, anything I think will sound good. I can't eat much, though. Only a couple of ounces. I eat something every 3 hours unless I'm sleeping.
I haven't found anything that didn't sit well except for some SpaghettiOs the day after I was discharged. My mouth started watering something fierce after eating a few spoons of it. I won't risk that again. I can't imagine throwing up. Oh, the pain!
I'm still learning which foods have the most protein. Some days it is like a full-time job. I'm doing good with the liquids, though. I sip on water or some fluids all day.
Some day we'll be experts at this all!
Jeanie
I am not real familiar w/ the DS....but wow...did not realize that you could eat whatever afterwards! I never learned about DS because my insurance did not cover that procedure....or lap band....only rny...open or lap. I am glad that you are doing well. I hope that I will get in plenty of liquids soon...hopefully one day this week..... next time you take a sip...lol...take one for me.
Lori,
I had my RNY done on 2/15/05 and am now on soft foods as of 1 week ago. So far I can tolerate everything really well, except scrambled eggs. I didnt puke but came close. My doc wants us to have as low carb as possible. I was allowed mashed taters and stuff when I was on full liquids and purreed, but now he wants to limit starches as much as possible. My main foods are tuna fish with lowfat mayo and some boiled egg mixed in, cheese, bananas, thinly sliced deli meat and crab meat. I can eat chicken, but havent tried a lot of it (not to pleasant looking when purreed). The two times I had it it felt heavy and although it was moist it felt dry once it hit my pouch.
My doc says no beef for six months except very finely ground beef like in chili. I had some Wendys chili for lunch and it was great! No problems getting it down and after maybe an ounce of beef and beans (tried to drain out the juice so I got more protein in) I was pleasantly satisfied. I'm gonna try shrimp and some fish soon, but I dont think I'm going to have any problems with it.
My doc says to eat about 1-2 ounces of protein (like fish, chicken, etc) and 1-2 ounces of fruit or veggie at my stage. I can only manage about an ounce of protein before I feel done so I dont usually get to the fruit or veggie. I am supposed to have 6 mini meals a day.
Usually I have some thinly sliced ham for breakfast ( I hate oatmeal and cream of wheat and eggs by themselves make me wanna gag) then 3 hours later I have a protein shake then lunch 3 hours later(usually tuna fish salad), then another shake about 3 hours later, then dinner 3 hours later, then usually a small piece of banana with some peanutbutter on it before bed. In between all that I squeeze in about 72 ounces of water or crystal light.
Like I said most of my meals are about an ounce, but my doc wants me to get up to 2 ounces so I can wean off the protein shakes. He wants our protein to come from food, not a shake.(easy for him to say!) Its hard to get it all in, but the weights melting offf, so I guess he knows his business.
Just remember every person and their surgeon is different. When in doubt call your surgeon and only go by what they tell you. They make the big bucks for a reason.

Hi ya Krissy! Sounds like you are doing wonderful. I can't wait to get to this point. How did you do when on full liquids though...could you only take an ounce of those at a time too? I go back to md's office 3-10 and have to eat a scrambled egg...or what I can tolerate of it...that morning. I have never been a big egg fan anyway...so I am kinda concerned about that....but can't wait to have some cottage cheese or yogurt! Good luck on your journey....and congratulations on your progress!
Thanks!
I did fine on full liquids too. I didnt really experiment too much beyond milk, cream soups(strained), pudding and yogurt though. They were just foods I was comfy with and I'm not real adventerous. On milk and cream soups I could drink about 4 ounces in 15 minutes (my doc says limit all sittings to 15 min-just part of his plan) On thicker stuff like yogurt I could get in about 2 ounces. I never felt queezy or anything , but then I dont try to pu**** either. When I get satisfied-not full- or I reach 15 minutes I stop. My doc was really adament about not reaching the full point. He said that our new pouch is so new and still healing that if you get to the full point you might be pushing it and run the chance of making yourself sick. I was surprised that I was able to tell the difference between full and satisfied. Its so nice to know that I can eat and not want to be "full".
Then again this is my surgeon and as we all know they all have there own rhyme and reason for things.
Good luck on the egg! You might try the egg beaters they settled a little better with me than the real scrambled egg I ate.
Keep us posted!
