Trouble with Protein
Anyone else finding it difficult to tolerate the protein powders? The thought of a Carnation instant breakfast drink makes me gag as does the thought of the protein powder I have. I am only eating broth, applesauce and yogurt smoothies. I don't mind it too much but I am getting bored and I still have 1 1/2 weeks until stage 4 and I worry about not getting enough protein.
Thanks!
Lisa,
I use 1 scoop UNJURY unflavored protein mix with 1 packet sugar free hot cocoa. The powder mixes really smooth and I cant taste any aftertaste to it at all. I use about an ounce of milk and 7 ounces of warm water. I cant tell the difference in this and regular hot chocolate. I just pop it in a coffee mug and stir it with a spoon, doesnt have any lumps or anything. Ive even tried it cold and it tastes like chocolate milk. No aftertaste or anything. I just prefer it warm.
Hope this might help.
Hi Lisa,
I know how you feel. At this time I can only tolerate the premixed (I like the Atkins strawberry) protein drinks. I haven't been able to do the powder. I've tried, but just want to gag. I did order some tasteless powder and need to try that in the next couple of days, and add it to yogurt. But for now, I will stick to the premixed stuff. It is more expensive, but I gotta do what I gotta do for now.
Good Luck,
Mary M.
Push through this it will get better
I had no problem taking protein prior to surgery but the third and 4th week post op i thought i was dommed - i gagged on everythign and nothing sounded good.
now a little over one month post op and they do taste better i dont gag at all unlees they get too warm.
I was told it oculd be a side effect of the anesthesia that makes you taste buds wacky - I dont know but keep trying and dont think about it so much. I would stress on it so much i would have nausea before even tasting the shake
good luck
Lisa- I guess I'm lucky cause I have a very liberal surgeon. I was liquids for four days, scrambled eggs and mashed potatoes for 3 days, and then he upped my food to include everything except red meat, raw veggies, nuts, and sugar. You might want to try some soft meats like tuna or chicken. I tried the protein shakes and boy do they suck! Hope you get thru. SueB
Thanks for your e-mail. I actually tried some egg salad, chicken salad, and spaghetti sauce with ground turkey. My doctor probably wouldn't be happy but it's made such a difference! I know that my doctor is extremely cautious and the fact that other doctors (like yours) allow people to increase their food intake fairly early, I felt that it was worth a try. Have you run into any problems as you tried new foods?
