Hi Kate, I don't know about the the stabbing and drain, because I had lap., but my doc. started me on a breathing thing in the hospital and it seemed to take away the cough. Who would have thought. It's just a little plastic thing that you breath in and out and it helps expand your lungs. I did it in the hospital, but didn't continue when I was released. With in a day or so I developed a little nagging cough so I started the breathin again and the cough quickly went away. I don't know if yours is related, but good luck. Mary

Everyone has some phlegm and stuff to cough up from the surgery. My dr said it was normal. Just practice deep breathing and spit any yucky phlegm out. I am still coughing occasionally and it does hurt. I didn't have a drain but I do have lots of pains around the incision. Just take your meds and take it one step at a time. Cara W.

Katie, you've just had major surgery that has reaaranged your plumbing. Did you think you would be running a marathon after a few days? LOL. Well, I did, but I learned I was wrong. You are right on track for your recovery. Coughing is not a bad thing, it helps to get the residual anesthesia out of your system and that is important. We are here for you if you have any other questions and to let you know that we love you and care for you and your success.--Pat
