I'm ten days post op today and still on clear liquids. Had some major pain on my left side after surgery that required a CAT scan to rule out trouble. Still sore, Doc wants me to stay on clear liquids at least one more week to help ease that pain. It's getting better, but still there. I have a bruise from my shoulder pit down to the bottom of my torso. What a trip. Getting better though. I'm so horribly hungry by mid afternoon to early evening. My bouillion and herb teas aren't going too far. Last night I did warm up some milk and that helped for about an hour, and I've blended some juices with ice and eaten them as a kind of slushy, but I'm just plain hungry. Anyone got any ideas or new ways of fixing clear liquids? My understanding of clear liquids is anything that doesn't have 'pulp' in it. Could I be looking at this wrong?? HELP!!!!

My doctor defined "clear" liquids as the following: - Fruit juices w/o added sugar ... no citrus or tomato juice the first 3 wks. - Crystal Light liquid or popsicles. Nutrasweet Kool-Aid or other sugar-free diet drinks - Sugar-Free or all-fruit popisicles - Coffee and tea - Broths and thin egg-drop soup (NO crunchies or solid pieces) - Sugar-free jello - Water - NO soda or carbonated beverages Hope this helps.

Your message is helpful to me. My surgery is 8 days away and controlling hunger seems to be the second most important thing on my mind. The first of course if making it through the surgery. Good luck.

Hi Meta, Have you tried the Protien Drink IsoPure? My nurse recommended it for the two days prior to the surgery. She said that it tastes like Koolaid but with all the protien in it it would keep you from feeling hungry. You can get it at GNC for about $3.00 a bottle. Hope it helps and keep smiling! Jami

Oh Meta, I understand you so well. I am two weeks post operation, and I too get hungry. Ihaven't found a protein drink that I like so it's been cyrtsal light and jello, broth, lemonade, and popsicles I even added peanut butter and whenI was sick the other day I had crackers. But yes I really thought I didn't have surgery becasue I was feeling hungry. Here a new soup O mad last night and it was wonderful. If you like sweet potatoes. Sweet Potatoe Soup 1 T flour 1 T butter Make a rou and that it melting the butter and flour together until thickens add 1 1/2 c of chichen broth 1 1/2 cups of sweet potatoe or two small/medium potatoes now for your flavorings: 1/8 t cinnamon 1/4 t ginger 1/8 nutmeg 1 c skim milk 1 T sugar (equal works wondefully) or any other sugar sub: blended all ingredients together and there you have another kind of broth/soup. You can do the same thing with white potatoes just change the seasonings : salt and pepper only or maybe some mrs dash. Just make it nice and creamy. DO you have or like cream of wheat or grits, I have been having oatmeal in the morning too, That is when I feel the most hungry. I hope this is helpful. I am going to GNC today to try the Isopur too, my nurse says it very good.I should be having at least 65 grams of protein and I haven't been getting it all in, maybe thats' why I am so hungry too.

Consuela, The soup receipe sounds wonderful, I will try it after my post-op appt. Thursday. You're eating a lot of the things I was told to avoid until I go 'legally' to pureed foods. I think it all depends upon the surgeon and our own body. I'm drinking more milk now than before and that seems to help a lot. One of my problems is that I do not put Aspartame into my body as it is such a poison and I react so to it that many of the sugar free things are just full of it so I avoid them. I had to break down and do a box of the popsickles and now I'm having that poisoned feeling from the Aspartame. So, I did try to make some of my own popsickles using watered down juices and that's not too bad. It's just having the energy to get up and do it. Thank goodness for water. I'm constantly sipping it and that helps lots too. I know I'm releasing the weight quickly as I got into a pair of jeans this morning that I haven't been able to wear for many months. Couldn't even zip them up there for a while and now I can easily slip them on. I'm not worrying about anything until after Thurs. Then we'll see how I'm doing, and hopefully the inflamation I had will be gone and I can go to the next phase. Good luck with staying full!

Are you supposed to be introducing protein at this stage? I'm on clear liquids also, and my dr. defines them as: water broth decaf tea or coffee, no creamer s/f jello s/f popsicles crystal light diluted juice NOT too exciting! Basically, I've been existing on water, popsicles, and a little jello. And some broth. BUT, as of the day after my discharge day, they did instruct me to add protein drink or protein powder to start getting in some protein. I have been trying to add the tasteless protein powder to the broth. I wonder if that would make you feel a little more full? I have not really been too hungry yet. I find that warm things make me feel more full than cold. Also, yesterday was the first time I did feel a little hungry, and I added a little too much black pepper to my chicken broth by accident. Weird, but it seemed to be more satisfying, and seemed more filling. Just an illusion, but still, weird. Good luck!
