I'm a Post-Op'er!!
Hi everyone.
I had my surgery on Monday the 7th and was back home on Wednesday the 9th.
I will mention a few things to be prepared for, or that I found to be true in MY case. 1. I had about 24 hrs to wait after surgery before I could sip water...I didn't think it would be a big deal but your throat will become extreamly dry! I was given a little sponge to moisten my lips and inside my mouth, but that only lasted so long. I was able to swish my mouth out with water and gargle if I promised not to swallow any water.
2. I thought I would have pain throughout my whole abdominal area. Wrong, I only have pain on my left side (I had Lap RNY). Each day though, I feel better and better.
3.Having Lap surgery and the use of the antibiotics made me very gassy and I continue to be....So if you go #2 have a nurse, family member or whoever be there for you because you won't be able to wipe, so be prepared to set your pride aside.
4. I did feel nausious after surgery, I believe it's a combination of the anestesia (sp) and the Demoral....The anestesia will just have to ware off and get out of your system naturally, but if you feel the pain meds are making you sick, Tell your doctor, he or she will prescribe something else.
5. I've found for some reason that my sense of smell is heightened since having the surgery, and things don't smell as good as I remembered them to be before surgery.
BEST of Luck to you all who are still waiting for surgery....Hope this was/is helpful.
Thanks for your post. It is helpful to us. Only a few more days for me. My friend that had the surgery warned me about how dry your mouth is and about the gas. YUCK. I didn't think bowel movements would happen that fast in the hospital especailly with the lovely pre-surgery "cleansing". Not looking forward to that.
Again, thanks for the helpful info.
