My Dr. requires that you go on a pre-op diet for 2 weeks. It's basically less than 50 carbs, less than 40 fat and more than 70 protein. I know some surgeons require you lose a certain amount before surgery. My Dr. just says to stay on the diet and lose. He says that if I gain weight he will cancel surgery & I have heard that he keeps his word. His philosophy is that it shrinks the liver and the fat in the stomach area, making surgery much safer. Also, he says if I'm not willing to follow the pre-op diet I sure am not going to follow the post-op diet. I've lost about 20 lbs since I first went to see him in Nov. Today's the big day. Please keep me in your prayers. Debbie

Katie, I have been trying to do the liquid protein thing, I have had 3 "incidents" of eating real food, but I pick right back up where I was. Last night I should have had yet another pro drink on the way home from work but I didn't and when I got home and knew there was homemade chilli, I scarfed! Today I am paying for it! My surgery is 2/15 and I plan on trying this diet until then. I hope my liver is shrunken enough to make the Dr's job easier. Write or E me and we can suffer together! Deb

My surgery is schedule for 2/22. I actually got in just 2 days after confirming because of a cancellation so I had to immediately start the protein only liquid meal replacement. I've slipped a few times but the nurse said that if the hunger was just too much to eat real food but only protein. That has helped a great deal in reducing the volume of food I loved to consume but I'm still scared and worried about after surgery and how to cope with hunger pains. Lets keep in touch and commiserate togehter as newbies. In the meantime good luck tomorrow.

My Dr. does not make his patients diet. I just have to have nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before surgery. He's done over 3000+ of these and never lost a patient, so I am not going to lose any sleep over it. I'm eating a lot, but nothing tastes that good anymore...I'm ready to move on. Cara W. Only 5 more days!

My surgery is scheduled for 2/15. I am on high protein and low carbs for one week before surgery and I am sticking to it. I want to get that liver shrunk. If it will help in surgery, I am all for it. Of course, it sure isn't easy!! Two days before surgery I go on a clear diet. I am ready for this surgery and can't wait until the 15th. Best wishes to those who have surgery coming up in the next week. We CAN do this!! Carol L
