i have been on high doses of narcotic pain meds under the care of pain med. specialist, i am concerned about being controlled properly after surgery.. i am scared of being in a lot of serios pain and detoxing from the oxvcontin as a result of the dr.s not being familiar with chronic management of pain. do i have a legit concern or am i just having pre op jitters?

I think you are just having some pre-op jitters.... the doctors know that they have to give you extra pain meds when you have been on controlled substance pain meds for any length of time. I too have to take prescribed narcotics, barbituates, and optiates to cope with my EXTREME pain everyday! This WAS a concern of mine ... but my surgeon reassured me he WILL make sure I have more than enough to help ease my post-op pain. I'm sure yours will do the same, especially if they know you are on all RX meds. Best of luck to you!! ((((((hugs)))))) Apple Pie Having Open RNY 02/22/05 16 days to go!

Ask your pain doctors to put their heads together with your surgery doctors BEFORE your surgery so a plan will be in place for your pain control needs post-op. If all your doctors are at the same hospital it should be easy to arrange. All your records are accessable to everyone involved if that is the case. If not, make sure your surgeon has got some written info or records on your med needs, including your pain doctor's recommendations, PRIOR to your surgery. Also be very honest and open about the amounts and frequency of pain meds you are taking and how much relief you generally get from them when you talk to your surgeon. That also could prevent you from getting caught short of enough pain med after surgery. Hope my suggestions help.
