What to have when you come home from surgery.
Hi Nina,
My surgery is on the 9th too!! :0
What is your protocol? How long are you on clear liquids, then advance to full liquids, then puree? It makes a difference in terms of what you'll need in the house.
I will be clear liquid 1 wk, full liquid 1 wk, pureed 2 wks, then in the 5th week soft foods and introducing other foods as tolerated.
For clear diet:
Water
Sugar free: jello, popsicles
Crystal Light
Broth: beef, chicken, vegetable
Diluted apple juice (dilute 50% with water)
Protein shakes made with water
Full liquids:
Milk
Cream soups
Sugar free yogurt
Sugar free pudding
Protein shakes made with milk
Other soups (lentil, split pea, etc) as long as blenderized so no pieces
Pureed:
Egg salad, tuna salad, chicken salad, run thru the food processor to make the consistency of applesauce
Baby food meats or fruits
Anything you want to run through the food processor to make a thick paste or, as above, like applesauce consistency
Soft foods:
Eggs
Fish
Cheese
All other foods, start introducing slowly, softer foods introduced first
As far as which protein shakes, everyone's tastebuds are different, but I would strongly recommend ordering several single-serving packets of various shakes to have on hand to try, that way if you find you don't like somehting you're not stuck with a 1 lb. tub of it! And definitely some tasteless protein powder to mix into any/all those things above!
Hope that's helpful! I'll be shopping all weekend too!

Lap-RNY in 4 days!
Wow! I'm scheduled for Friday (2/11). I'm on a clear liquid diet from tomorrow on and we're going to the store tomorrow to get my pre-op supplies. I hadn't even THOUGHT of what to get for after. My doctor gave me a list and it's somewhere. I'll get a new list on Tuesday when I do my pre-op at the surgical facility. This is a big help, guys. Thanks!

Hi Nina:
I had my RNY 2/4 and my doctor lets you use atkins shakes or Slimfast - but the low carb version. One can lasts me for the 3 protein servings a day a need to take the first 2 weeks. I also have sugarfree pudding made with skim milk, yogurt, low fat cottage cheese and low fat ricotta, sugar free jello, even tomato soup. After 2 weeks I can add egg, tuna, banana. Lots of prayers and good wishes going for your surgery. Let us know when you come home and how you're doing

It sounds like my doctor is a little different from a lot of folks that I have read online here. We are not to drink any protien drinks and they can lead to damage of the kidneys according to my surgeon. I was already eating cottage cheese and cream soups on Friday after my surgery on Wed. 2-2. We have to be sure that 1/2 of the amount we eat is protien and if we use baby foods, level 3 are reccomended, that no sugar has been added. I am already drinking 64 oz of water a day and I usually have 1 sugar-free popsicle a day. Good luck to you! Follow what your doctor tells you and don't let us influence you.........Patti
