Arthritis issues
I am two years post op form my bypass surgery. I am currently fighting a form of arthritis called seronegative polyarthritis. My Rhuematologist thinks there could be some connection to the bypass surgery. The big problem with fighting the artritis is that I can not use any asprin based products which are obviuosly the best for inflammation. I have been in constant pain for almost 12 weeks now. Has anyone else run into this after surgery or is this just a case of bad luck?
FYI, other than this arthritis problem I fell great! I am at 95% of my goal weight and have been stable at this weight for over 6 months now.I actually have to eat more thanI like to so that I do not lose anymore weight. Best thing I ever did....as long as this arthritis issue is not connected.
Congrats on your weight loss and maintenance!!! I have some arthritis in my back and left shoulder (had it before surgery)...my doc gave me a prescription for Ultram and it works wonderfully---it's safe for us to take. You didn't say what you're doing taking for your pain,,,so just a suggestion.
I'll be 2 years post op next week. I'm doing fine with that part too....best thing I ever did for my back . I only have back pain now when I work too hard in my garden, but the ultram takes care of that. Best of luck to you and hope your pain goes away soon...

Hi Jim,
I can't answer about the connection between WLS and arthritis. I have several arthritis related issues which I had pre op. I have fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. I have to say that the pain has greatly improved since the surgery but the on going issue is the iritis which is related to AS. I have seen the leading Uveitis specialist in Toronto and he said he is unaware of any connection. Now that doesn't mean there isn't. I think it has something to do with the malabsorption factors and in particular Vit A. The Dr's have put me on a low dose steriod in an effort to control the inflammation. Of course this in time can cause glaucoma, cataracts and a host of other eye problems.
Good luck with getting the pain under control.
