Cut back on carb consumption ... carbs can cause water retention as does salt/sodium in the food we eat. Are you drinking enough fluids? If you aren't, that can cause water retention too. No anti-inflammatories or aspirin products after WLS. The only one I take is Tylenol. Mary

Wanda, It has to be difficult. Maybe if you remind her that our bodies need 60 grams of protein JUST to maintain normal muscle mass AND that our heart is a muscle!!!! That really got my attention when I was told that. I sure didn't want any heart problems. If she likes crackers, how about some slices of cheese to go on them. Or deli meat that is easy to grab on the go. My brother has lots of tummy problems after surgery, so he found that crackers helped so much. Maybe not a good choice, but it was the one food that didn't cause him problems. Is she having problems eating? Would she eat Stallone protein puddings? They really taste good, are ready-made and have 19 grams of protein in them. I know for myself, sometimes, nothing really sounds good to eat so grabbing something quick and easy is easier (altho not as healthy for sure). Mary

I am shareing my house with other people right now so it is hard, they did agree to the bread thing, they are not so agreeable with the pasta, potato, and rice part. But they will be moving out soon so I can get back to being the one who makes the decisions on what is in the house. What is the deal with nuts and seeds? Some people say you can eat them and somepeople say you cant. Thank you Dana

Dana, Could you switch to whole grain breads, sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes, whole grain pastas etc. They definitely are lower in carbs and should not trigger our carb cravings. I feel very fortunate that it is just the two of us here and Hal lets me do most of the decisions on grocery shopping/cooking. He does have his treats BUT they are cinnamon type things and I'm so allergic they are not tempting at all. I need to revamp what I have in the house switching to the whole grains. I insisted the other night that we buy lettuce etc for salads. I can't eat a lot of them, but he needs to eat healthier too so it will help both of us. I want to switch my bread eating to high fiber bread which is definitely more filling too than white bread. So a step at a time. Mary

I am trying to do high fiber carbs now when I do carbs. So plan to go get multi-grain bread instead of white bread, yams/sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes. etc. I know many recommend going on a low glycemic value eating plan which is suppose to help keep the carbs cravings in check. Mary

Topic: RE: Plateau Breaker
Isn't it frustrating when we think we are right where we want to be and the doctor wants more. I was fortunate that my surgeon set a very realistic goal for me. I'm only 5'1" and started my journey at 305 (altho my highest weight was 330). My surgeon said that he would guarantee that I could get to 180 and he would be very pleased with that for me. I'm at 174 and would like to lose more. His realistic goal really helped me with my "mind games". So I'm taking it a day at a time and trying to stay on track. My health has done a dramatic turn-around and I'm doing so well. Let us know how the plateau breaker works for you. Mary

Hello Dana, Taking "water pills" is one option, however you probably need to talk to your doctor before taking these. I had a doctor tell me years ago (when I was pregnant with my 21 year old) that drinking water will take fluids off your body. Believe it or not, it works! Do you get enough water in each day? Also, it is my understanding that we are not to take NSAIDS (anti-inflammatories), whi*****ludes ibuprofen. This is also something you should probably run by your doctor. I have had no problems taking acetaminophen. Wanda

Hi, yes I have to fight the card monster all the time. I want carbs all the time, I live for carbs. It is a hard fight. I have seven people in the house and they dont understand no carbs. I think the carb monster has taken them over to his side. Everything they cook is 90% carbs, and why do we need to have potato chips in the house? So yes I feel your pain. Dana
