Topic: RE: I'm ready for plastic surgery
Lynda, First if you are NOT comfortable with a surgeon or do not have faith in a surgeon, it is time to see someone else. My understanding when I was a Kaiser patient is that they only will remove the apron (excess skin) not do any of the muscle tightening that so many need. You will see good improvement with that procedure, but may not be totally satisfied with the outcome. I thought that Kaiser would allow the patient to pay themselves for the additional work to be done. You might also want to check with UCLA. I have a friend who has had plastic surgeries done there thru the teaching school and has been extremely pleased with the results. Hope you find some answers and a surgeon who you like and trust. Topic: I'm ready for plastic surgery
I went to see a Kaiser plastic surgeon in Downey last week, and boy was it a strange experience. The doc (Dr. Kivuls) spent a lot of time with me, but almost never made eye contact. I got the impression that he didn't much like doing plastic surgery on post-bariatric patients--after all, it's only cosmetic. When it was all done I was quite confused about what things were possible to have done, though I did clearly understand that the only thing he was willing to do was cut off the apron--but that would be limited to what he could reach on each side. He made it clear they would be no turning me on the table to get to hard to reach areas. Does anyone know of other Kaiser docs in the Downey office who don't mind doing post-bariatric cases? At this point I have no confidence in this guy and would never go into surgery with him. I'm sure I've heard of others among us who got more than the bare minimum from kaiser. Dose anyone have info to share? I'd really love to hear from you. Also, I'd like to say that I don't visit this board very often--I'm just too busy. I posted a few weeks ago and very much appreciate the responses that I got. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to share.

Topic: I'm told, 1400 is my number....
Here lately I've been VERY FRUSTRATED with not losing any weight, and actually gaining some! I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to have to count my calories. I sure didn't want to get to that point, but alas, I'm there. I called the dietitian at the bariatric center who has helped me through this whole process and talked to her about my concerns of weight gain. I admitted that I know exactly what has gotten me into this mess... snacking!!! I told her that I've come to my senses (after weeks of kidding myself and all of you!) and know I'm going to have to count every morsel that goes into my mouth. I asked her what the lowest amount of calories I should be taking in is and she said 1400. I just knew she was going to tell me 1000 to 1200. She said that my body will never absorb all the calories I'm taking in since my innards have been re-routed, so the 1400 doesn't sound so high after all. I know I've been setting goals for weeks... and I've been sticking to my water and exercise goals. But now is the time for me to get serious about what I eat! I don't want this 10 pound gain to turn into a 20 pound gain, etc.... Oh, I hate to count calories!!!! I thought that when I had this magical surgery, I would never have to again!!! Don't get me wrong... I am SO THANKFUL that I had the surgery and am healthier than I've been in ages. I just for once would like to have a normal BMI and maintain it for more than two weeks!!! And, for me, that means counting calories, darn-it! Here's hoping for a good report when I check in on Friday! Wanda

Topic: No time to exercise ...
This was in our paper yesterday and was geared to AZ, but would work for anyone just substitute a local attraction ... Too hot? Make a date with a friend for an early morning walk. If you need scenery for inspiration, stroll through the Desert Botanical Garden. Too tired? Shorten your routine for the day. Even 10 minutes helps, and once you get started, you might find the energy to go longer. Drink water; dehydration can make you tired. Too many family obligations? Plan activities that get everyone moving, like an afternoon at the park or a trip to the Phoenix Zoo. Shun the shuttle. Too much reading or studying to do? Walk or bike to a park, library or coffeehouse to hit the books. Too many favorite TV shows to watch? Record them and skip the commercials to save yourself about eight minutes for every 30-minute show. Devote the saved time to exercise.

Yeah I agree with Mary could be the sugar alcohols cause it does the same to me. Now I try to stay away from all those types of sugars but once in awhile I eat them but I take a gas tablet immediately after to help with the gurgles. Annette

Hey Sorry I am posting late but this is my last week before my vacation, Florida here I come. To be honest I think that I am going to lose weight during my vacation by doing more walking, swimming, and running. I really am going to make the most of it and take advantage of all that time and exercise more. I don't exercise because I don't have time but next week I will have plenty of it so no excuses. This week my goals are vitamins and medication and to get more fluids, I don't get enough. I hope everyone's Easter was nice. I had a nice one. Love Annette

Topic: RE: Does your stomach "girgle" after you eat?
Rhonda, When you say something sweet, do you mean an item like ice cream or candy or cookies OR sweet tasting like a piece of fruit? If it is a goody and it has sugar alcohols in it, it definitely could be caused from the sugar alcohols as they can cause gas, bloating, intestional problems. I avoid them totally ... they cause me so much problems that even 1 gram of a sugar alcohol is too much for me. Mary

AWESOME Sarah, you're going Great. Take care of yourself and feel better soon. I would stop the PB, it may be too high fat. When I had the flu I did the BRAT diet ... B = banana R = rice (small amounts, be careful) A = applesauce (unsweetened of course) T = toast dry Lots of fluids too. Don't worry about e-mailing, I know you are busy and I wasn't concerned. Mary
