Good news, bad news

Good Morning .... Worked out in the pool for an hour last night. What fun to have the pool in our backyard. They were predicting thunder storms so I got my swim in earlier in the evening. Well, the good news is that I've now lost 130 lbs ... a new low for me. The bad news is that it is a direct result I'm sure from dumping last night. It was so hot yesterday **** degrees) that I couldn't sleep even with the air and fans on. So I got up and ate a sugar free popsicle then it was so good, I ate a second one. Finally found some I like and only had 1 gram of sugar alcohols in it. Had eaten 2 before during the day but never two right after each other. Within 10 minutes I had heart palpitations and about 20 minutes later vomiting and diarrhea. It lasted almost 3 hours!!!!! Not a fun time at all. It really scared me too as my heart was racing. A couple of times I was tempted to have Hal take me to emergency. Got out my WLS books by Barbara Thompson and was amazed to read that Sorbital can cause dumping in some people. Gosh I only had 2 popsicles with no sugar in them, just sorbital (total of 2 grams). Have always been sensitive to sugar alcohols, but was amazed what this did to me especially in the low quantity it was too. This morning I feel fine. Got a couple hours of sleep too. Threw out the popsicles as soon as I got up. Definitely not going to eat even 1 of them again. Getting together on Saturday and Sunday with my WLS AZ buddies along with 2 from CA and 2 from New York. Everyone is coming here on Sunday for a barbecue and pool party. Should be lots of fun. Can't wait. Hope you all have a great day whatever you do. Mary 305/175/???

Mary, Congratulations on your loss! It's wonderful, and you have done so well. Also, sorry about the cause. I so understand about dumping on the sugar alcohols. In fact, I can tolerate more grams of regular sugar than any sugar alcohols. Hope you can find something you like just as well that won't put you through this. Linn

Linn, Thank you. I have always been sensitive to the sugar alcohols so usually avoid them totally. Since this had such a small amount I wasn't concerned. Always before I have had the laxative effect if the sugar alcohols were high. I was so suprised to have the racing heart, vomiting and diahrrea with the two popsicles. I just couldn't believe it. I have never had it happen this way before. The good of this is that it is convinced me that I truly don't want sugar items ... this was just way tooo scary for me. Mary

Mary, I'm sorry you had to go through that. I have not had any throwing up episodes since 2 or 3 weeks post op (food stuck) So I can't imagine how terrible that was. I'm glad you found out what caused it. I find I'm dumping more now, since my TT and hysterectomy. I have been able to tolerate a tablespoon of ice cream or even 2, but now I get so sick. Hey, I noticed your weight loss numbers!! Way to go Mary! You have done such a fabulous job, and you are one of the best cheerleaders on this board. Hugs, Debbie Have fun at your barbcue

Debbie, I guess it was really good that it happened. It now has reinforced that sugar is NOT a good thing at all for me. I had been doing a bite or two of things Hal had, now it has furthered my resolve to stay away from that stuff totally. I just don't need it. AND if 2 grams of this stuff did me in, imagine what a cookie or 1/2 a piece of cake could do. Not worth it. The episode really scared me. I lost 50 lbs before surgery, 80 since for the total of 130. I think I may be slower than many, but I remind myself at how far I have come. I am below my surgeon's goal for me. My goal was to be healthy and I truly am. I'm still considered obese (BMI 33.1) for my height, so I would like to lose more. I'm trying to take it a day at a time. Can't wait to see everyone this weekend. So much support with them (and here too). I truly like coming to OH and being with all of you too. Mary

Mary, You have done a great job and it shows! Try someting else that would satisfy you and not make you sick. It's going to be a trial and error, so take it slow. I live in AZ to and agree about the heat UGH!! Hopefully it will rain soon but not sunday on your party. Have Fun! Jill

Jill, Thank you. Not to worry, I am a big fan of sugar free snow cones and they have been a major help before and after surgery. I use syrups sweetened with Splenda and do just fine. Mary

Its so good to hear from you Mary! I figure you've been real busy this summer with the new house, new pool and visitors. I have been missing you here lately! Its so strange how different our bodies react to different foods. I have absolutely no problems with anything.... so far. Who knows how my body will react in the future. I hate to hear about the horrible episode you went through. I bet that did scare both you and Hal! I'm glad you made it though it okay. I dumped occasionally at the beginning, but now everything seems to be fine. I haven't really tried anything that I think would cause me to dump. It sounds like you're really careful about what you eat... who would have ever throught something with only 2 grams of sugar would make you dump? Hope your bbq goes well this weekend and the weather cooperates! Please, keep us posted. Wanda
