Thought a question of the day thread might help pick up the activity on this board. We all been thru so much together, I hate to see the board become inactive. NOTE: Anyone may post the question of the day. It can pertain to anything, does not have to be WLS related. Today's Question: What is your favorite protein shake or protein bar? My favorite is till the Uturn bar. I eat 1 of them a day usually. 1/2 is a meal replacement for breakfast along with a small piece of fruit. The other 1/2 I eat later in the day. Mary

My favorite is a slim-whey bar. They're little and they make a great snack alternative when I feel the need. I miss my Nectar protein and need to order some more. I tried something different (milk based) and then found out I'm lactose intolerant again and I've kind of just slacked off. I think I felt better and I know I did better weight wise when I was drinking Nectar regularly. Think I'll go place an order now! Julie

Julie, I always make my protein drinks with water. Never seemed to make a real difference to me in taste whether with water or with milk, so have used water from the start. I knew lactose intolerance was a possibility and have dealt with it twice in my life. Funny how it can come and go. The Nectar drinks are good. Mary

My favorite source of protein is my protein shake: All the Whey Protein Powder (22 grams of protein) mixed with 8 oz. Carb Countdown Skim Milk (12 grams of protein). I usually have it for breakfast. Then I usually have a Balance Bar (16 grams of protein) or CarbWise Bar (22 grams of protein) for my 3:00 p.m. snack. Great idea, Mary!

Wanda, I have tried the Carb Countdown Milk. It's actually pretty good. I like the power crunch bars too especially the French Vanilla one. Mary

Jill, If you are getting enough protein a day from food, you really don't need the bars or shakes. My surgeon wants me to have 75 to 125 grams of protein a day. Many people post-op need to supplement their protein intake with shakes to get enough protein grams in. Mary

My favorite bar WAS the EAS apple-cinnamon one (Advantedge I think they spelled it); they've replaced it in the multipack now with a caramel apple one; haven't tried it yet, but I'm probably not going to like it as well. My surgeon wanted us to discontinue shakes/bars etc at 6 weeks post op; I still use the bars as meal replacements when I can't eat properly based on either what's available (including time ) or where I am.. I have some more shake samples, but have so far managed to avoid needing them, I think. I'm not closely monitoring the amount of protein I get in a day, but so far, my bloodwork has all been okay, and he does check the chemistries that would indicate a lack of protein.. So I'm somewhat assuming I have enough.. But it would be nice to know; I should probably do a sample measure and see what I actually am ending up with in a day. ..N

Mary, What a great idea! My favorite protein drink for the winter has been Matrix 5.0, chocolate. I make it warm and with chocolate carb countdown beverage for my morning meal. As spring is arriving I'm getting tired of hot chocolate and I look forward to something else. Not quite sure what though. My favorite protein bar is the french vanilla power crunch bar. It did become a problem for me, and old habits snuck back into my diet plan. I was craving those darn bars, and would eat as much as 5 per day. I don't like them warm so they are in the cabinet. If I want ONE, I will put ONE in the freezer for the next day. I had been considering throwing the 2 boxes I have left away. But, as long as I behave and have a couple a week I'm ok. You know I wonder whether others have a problem limiting themselves to one of their favorite protein bars. Or, am I just . Paula

Paula, By heating the Matrix, are you destroying some of the protein in it? Some protein powders are not to be heated (I thought). I like the Matrix also. Take vanilla, 8 oz of water, 1/2 cup of frozen berries, 1/2 banana (sometimes) and blend till thick and creamy (like a milkshake). Very good that way. My mom did protein drinks and she always made hers up and then froze them. Ate them ice cream and loved them that way. I like the Uturn Bars cold, but also room temperature. I never thought to put them in the freezer. So I just took a French Vanilla Power Crunch bar and put it in the freezer. Will let you know how it is tomorrow. I like the Power Crunch bars but have found they are not filling enough for me as a meal replacement. They are not as dense I guess as the UTurn bar. After eating a power crunch for a meal, I found that I was still wanting something else. They work great tho as a snack item. I, some days, eat more than one bar BUT if I am doing as a meal replacement or to get in more protein, then I don't see it as a problem. IF the bars are talking to me and causing me to want more and more, then that is addictive behavior and would be a problem. So if eaten to get in protein, OK ... but if eaten as a compulsion/treat item then not OK. Does that make sense???? Mary
