Gas Problems
Hi all;
I just became member hoping that someone out there is or has experienced some problems that I have. I had the surgery in Feb 04 and I have been doing okay until now. I am experiencing lots of Bad Gas. It seems like everything I eat gives me gas... I haven't either been able to sleep with my husband because the gas stinks so bad.... I had the colonoscopy, endoscopy and Cat-Scan and everything turned out fine.
Please help me....
Lisa
I didn't look at your profile. Do you know if you were distal or proximal? I belive the distal patienst have a bigger problem with gas. I have gas at times, and I believe it is worse when I eat too many carbs and junk. Forget milk,or ice cream. I have to drink lactaid milk, and I don't care for ice cream so that isn't a big deal. I think they make pills to help with Gas. Do a Q&A search on gas. I'm sorry.

Debbie, I was going to respond to this, but your posting sounds just like me...right down to the lactaid milk. And ice cream is out of the question. I tried a little again last night and was desperately ill in a little over 30 minutes.
Gas pills don't help much. I had gotten some Devrom (I think it's called) which is supposed to be an internal odor eliminator. Colonoscopy patients use it. I never used it because it got better, but I may have to give it a try.

Julie,
My problem started last month (exactly one year from my date Feb-04). My symptoms seemed like it was due from Milk (Lactose Intolerant). I went out and purchased the Lactose pills, but after a few days, this no longer helped me. Then I went to my MD who said I might have an ulcer, therefore, he perscribed "Nexium". Again, this helped with the heartburn, but now the gas appeared with a vegence. I called Dr. Ballantine (the dr. who performed my surgery) and says its normal. I can't believe that smelly gas this bad is normal... IT CANT BE! It's been so bad that I have kicked my younger son out of his room so I could sleep in it. I was tired of getting up to go the bathroom to let "loose". The worse time for me is at night. I've been getting very deprest due to this. I'm embarrased to go out in public for the fear of letting loose..what then? I don't know what else to do, what pills to take, who to talk to..... what??? How did you get better? How long have you had the gas problem? I plan on ordering Devrom tomorrow. I wanted it now, but can't find a store that carries it, so I must order on line. Thanks for listening, i'm just venting.

Lisa,
If you are lactose intolerant, it can cause major gas problems. Try avoiding milk/dairy products including cottage cheese, cheese, yogurt, whey, butter, margarine, milk, and see if you feel better. Some people with lactose intolerance can handle some cheeses and yogurt but I was one of those that could not. I had lactose intolerance years ago. Many protein drinks and bars are Whey based, so if you are drinking those switch over to soy based when you try eliminating the dairy products. Whey is a milk deriative. Are you taking any meds that have whey in them? At the time I had lactose intolerance they had me taking some over the counter med for my tummy ... what a shock when I read the ingredients and discovered Whey in them.
Also so many of the low carb items on the market today are loaded with sugar alcohols. Sugar alcohols can definitely cause gas as well as diahhrea. I'm super sensitive to them even in small dosages.
Unfortunately the bad gas can be a result of the surgery ... not sure why. I copy into a folder tips etc I have found along the way. Here is one on the gas odor that may be of help to you... I'm NOT endorsing the product just posting the comments made by another post op:
"While surfing the net last month I came
across articles written by a surgeon in TN doing these procedures
and he actually addressed these problems and suggested a solution!!
I'm not endorsing or advertising, however, if you are experiencing
malodorous stools and excess gas you might want to give it a try. It
worked for me. It's an OTC capsule called DEVROM. You can order it
directly from Parthenon 1-800-453-8898 at a cost of $10.24/100
capsules, $58.50/600 or $114.60/1200. I take 2 after each meal - a
very small price to feel totally comfortable around people and
public bathrooms!"
You could do a search on google.com for Devrom. It may be something that even GNC would carry. Hope you find answers and solutions soon.

Lisa,
I'm glad you brought this up because I've noticed I've been having bad gas here lately also. It looks like you've gotten some great advice that I will take heed to also. I hope you're okay. I think I can attribute mine to mixing my protein shakes with carb countdown instead of soy milk here lately.

Hi Trisha
When is your dr. appt? Let me know what he says to you. I got some advice about taking Devrom. I just ordered it, I hope it helps with the smell. I'm going to go to the Natural Previlion store tomorrow to get some All Natural pills for the IBS. At this point, I'll try anything. I can't stand this smell....
