Help Danluvsme2!
I posted a week ago or so about not losing weight for 6 weeks. I remember reading you had a problem with a plateau before and got some great advice from other people. What got you losing again? I am really starting to panic, this is my 7th week of not losing. I actually gained a couple of pounds. I have been really hungry lately too and I'm afraid I'm getting more than 1200 calories a day. Since March I started taking the birth control shot which causes weight gain. I thought it wouldn't be a problem for me since I had just gotten the surgery but I really haven't lost much since I've been taking it. I just hope I'm not done losing. I am grateful for the 56 pounds I have lost but to go through this surgery for 56 pounds doesn't seem worth it. Anybody have any suggestions??? Thanks.

It has to be frustrating to hit a plateau this long. You definitely haven't stopped losing tho. My brother is over 2 years out and is still losing ... slower yes, but losing.
It might be worthwhile to go to fitday.com and start doing a food journal there. Also are you (no need to respond, just things to think about):
1. exercising at least 4 times a week for 30 minutes each time?
2. getting a minimum of 60 grams or more of protein each day?
3. drinking a minimum of 64 ounces of fluids each day?
4. staying away from carbs such as bread, pasta, potatoes, & rice?
5. are you avoiding drinking with meals?
.........do you want a minimum of 15 minutes after drinking before eating?
.........do you wait 30 minutes after eating to start drinking?
6. are you grazing (eating throughout the day)? - remember 3 small meals and 2 snacks (maximum) a day
Hope you find a solution soon. Let us know what you do to break the plateau. I'm sure all of us will go thru it too.
Mary
Thanks so much Mary for your response! I have caught myself grazing on the weekends and I really need to watch it! I have been really good with exercise, liquids, and protein. I am a diabetic and my doctor told me to get in more carbs than most people. It may be slowing down my progress. Thanks again for taking time to respond. I'll let you know when the scale starts moving again.
Hi L.H.
Mary has given some good advice. I know how frustrating this can be. I went 5 weeks without losing and finally lost 5 lbs. Now I am not losing again. This sucks bigtime! I can so understand how frustrated you are.
But on the other hand, I know what my faults are. Ugh....here goes honesty:
I don't exercise much.
I graze sometimes, on healthy food, but still grazing.
I don't measure my food.
I don't occupy my time with other things to "forget" about eating
I don't seem to stay full long enough
I suppose these are some good things I do do:
I track on fitday.com (this is why I know my faults)
I make healthy choices
I don't eat white carbs (bread, flour, pasta, rice, potatoes)
Even though I don't measure, I do eyeball measuring
I drink my protein
take my vitamins
take my calcium
try to get in my liquids
don't drink with meals
I to am diabetic and found that cutting out the carbs has:
1.) helped me lose weight
2.) dropped my sugar so I am no longer on meds and my fasting sugar is 112.
Even though I know what to do, doesn't mean I do it all the time. But learning about yourself is the first step into changing. So my advice is to REALLY critique yourself. Be honest and either write down everything you eat or put it in fitday (my recommendation). This will let you SEE what you eat throughout the day. Most of us don't see it because it is spread out over 12-15 hours but when it is logged, reality sets in.
If you can get in more exercise, do it. This I find this to be the HARDEST thing for me. I hate it to be honest. But like my doc said calories in has to equal calories out. If you take is 800 calories, you have to exercise it out. Once you start exercising, your body will continue burning thoughout the day even if you are just sitting. So you don't have to be a gym junkie. This is easier said than done. I know! but it IS the correct answer.
I kow what it is like when you take in more calories than you should. I battle that every day. I know I can eat more than 1200 calories a day if I wanted to. it is all about making the right choices of food. Lower calories choices vs. higher calorie ones. That is key to keeping it under 1200. I like to stay between 800-1000 but finding it harder to say around the 800 cause I get hungry. I haven't found a way to combat that yet. I am searching though. Right now I am chewing a lot of Double Bubble bubble gum (they have it in sugar free at walmart). I am hoping this will help me to not eat in between meals.
This is all a trial and error thing. That is why it is so important to develop a support system. One at home and one here. We learn from each other.
What type of birth control? Can you talk to your ob/gyn about something that won't effect your weight. I am lucky. I am 40 and I'm done with kids so my DH went and got snipped so I wouldn't have to take b/c pills anymore. It is a nice freedom. I have been on them since I was 15.
I hope this helps some. Please keep in touch and let me know how things are going. We NEED each other to get through this. I know I couldn't do it without all of you.
hugs

Joanne,
Thanks for taking the time to reply. It sounds like we are having very similar experiences. For me, I find myself in denial about some of the stuff I put in my mouth. I don't want to let myself down by going through so much and falling into old habits. I do need to do a reality check and be honest with myself about some of my food choices. I have been really good about exercise(which I hate!!) but I know I could do better in choosing healthier foods to eat. It is a curse that I don't really dump on anything. I have not tested my limits for sweets, which I am staying away from, but I know that I can tolerate fatty foods. I don't eat junk food at all but instead of having a couple of slices of bacon for breakfast, I could opt for yogurt. I don't post a lot on this site but I am on here almost everyday reading posts. You have been an inspiration for me as well as many other folks on this site. Thanks so much for your support. Please feel free to email me anytime: [email protected]. Thanks again.

Joanne,
I agree, great post. Very good information.
I have found myself doing more carbs lately. It is interesting my brother who is over 2 years out can't do bread at all. I can eat it without a problem. Fortunately I don't do pasta or rice since surgery, just a smidge of potatoe ocassionally ... but do need to work on no bread (toast, tortillas etc.). I also find that I graze some too. Noticed this increased with added stress of getting our home ready to sell and move. Working hard to keep on track. I want to hit that 100 lbs mark very soon.

L.H.,
I had surgery about the same time as you and have also recently been stuck on a six week plateau. I finally have broken my plateau by going back to the gym/ doing aqua aerobics and treadmill. I increased my water intake, advice given to me by people on the boards. I am not loosing as quickly as I would like to, but last week I lost 6 pounds, breaking my plateau. I also take depro-provera, the birth control shot and had to start it even before I had surgery. I am now at a loss of 59 pounds and wish I was much further along. I just have to remember that all of us loose at different paces, and try not to be so hard on myself. I will pray that you soon break your plateau as well.
