Thyroid Question

I just went in for my 3 month check. I've had my thyroid checked before surgery many times and it was normal. They drew blood to check iron. B-12, blood sugar, etc., and it came back that I'm anemic and my thyroid is 10.79. The nurse said normal for thyroid is .34 - 5.6. When the nurse called me with this info, I had questions that she didn't really seem to be able to answer. What causes this? Is my diet missing something? Am I eating too much or not enough of something? Is this an underactive thyroid or an overactive thyroid? Anywho.....they are putting me on medication for it and I have to be re-checked in 6 weeks. Can anyone help me out with these questions? Sure would appreciate it! Thanks!!!!! Marcia

Marcia, those are hard questions! I don't know anything about the thyroid problems or medication because I've never had that. But I do know that the anemia is quite common after WLS. You didn't mention what your level was, and I'm certainly no expert on that either. On my last visit to my PCP, she reviewed my labs and said I am anemic also according to the lab results. She also stated she wasn't worried about it because that particular lab has a very high median range. WLS changes a lot of things in all of us. The best thing for you to do is follow your doc's instructions and take the meds as prescribed. Also, do some research on the internet about hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. Windy Pat

Well, I have hypothyroid, and my level was 3.8 at my 2 month post op visit. I still take .100 mcg of synthroid. I really don't understand the numbers. There is a good website at the about.com forums. THey have a very active board and can help you out. Good luck. Debbie -50
