has anyone had episodes of dumping with dairy? I have eaten yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. previously without a problem, but yesterday.... I ate yogurt for breakfast...then a couple of small pieces of cheddar at lunch...then at dinner I had cottage cheese..not alot of any of those things. About an hour after I ate...WHOA NELLY... Haven't ever had that happen before. I didn't vomit or get sweaty like I have heard dumping episodes described; but I DID get diarrhea, EXTREMELY bad. any thoughts??

Morning Sherri As a matter of fact, so far the only thing I've dumped on was dairy. I was around a week or so out & tried yogurt one day (the low carb one) & then s/f pudding the next day. Funny thing is, I was walking around w/my heart pounding out of my chest, & I was sweating soooo bad (even my feet - lol). Anyways, I went to the doctor to find out what was wrong with me & he told me I was dumping. I felt like such an idiot - like I should have known better - lol. I've been told that that doesn't mean that I can never have dairy again (I do eat cheese); however, I'm just too scared to try it. According to the dr (& most post ops) something might make you dump one day & the next day be fine . . . & vice versa. Were you ever lactose intolerant prior to surgery?? I would suggest going without it for a little while. I use lactaid milk (w/soy) when I need to use milk in things . . . & there are lots of other alternatives out there. Give them a try & see how you find them. Amanda -45

could be dumping from the lactose sugars in dairy products OR you could be developing lactose intolerance. When I had lactose intolerance, I had severe diarrhea (this was years before the surgery) but no other problems. Fortunately I no longer have lactose intolerance. Also fats can cause diarrhea, so maybe you had more than usual. Mary

Nothing makes me dump unless its me eating fat too fast!! Well, no thats a lie...the atkins ice cream made me dump! In the beginning sugar did somewhat but now its not a problem which is kind of scary but I do my best to avoid high sugar foods b/c sugar is a trigger for me. I have been craving sodas but I havent given into the urge yet b/c soda is another trigger food! I hope you get past it!! maybe you need to not eat dairy at every meal? MAybe thats what made you sick? before surgery if I ate too much dairy I would get diarrhea sick. Just a thought! sarah

Interesting that Atkins ice cream made you dump; I think I had a similar experience. Last Saturday night, I ate some Breyer's low carb, sugar free ice cream and I probably ate more than I should have because my grandaughter and I were eating straight from the tub (you get to do that at Grammy's house!) Went to bed feeling fine, but woke up at 6 am with bad stomach pain, diarrhea and dry heaves. It was awful! I think it was dumping, but I've never heard of anyone dumping several hours after eating. Has anyone else experienced this? Julie

HI Julie: That has happened to me several times. Usually 2-6 hours later. Sorry to hear you had a bad night. I find that trying new foods to increase the choices is a challenge. There doesn't seem to be alot of consistancy between what will make me dump from time to time. I think I've dumped about 4 times since surgery. Eileen

Thanks. I guess I was expecting that if you dumped, you did so within 30 minutes to an hour after eating and the fact that it was several hours later really took me by surprise. I'll be a little more careful about that Ice cream! Julie
