Hi there... I thought it might be a good idea for all of us to post our protein sources online so that others can get ideas of what 'else' they can eat. I, for one cannot do the protein shakes. They are just nasty. So I try to get my protein from food sources. Here is a list of some of my protein sources: Carnation Instant Breakfast w/one cup milk (13g protein) EAS Advant Edge Carb Control Nutrition Bar Cookies & Creme (25g protein) Chocolate Creme Pie (26g protein) 1/2 cheeseburger small - no bun (8g protein) sunflower seeeds (1/2 cup = 16g protein) almonds (1/2 cup = 15g protein) egg (7g protein) shrimp 4-5 medium (5g protein) lobster 3/4 tail (20g protein) scallops 3-4 large (16g protein) chicken wings (5g protein each) fresh frozen soy beans with garlic butter (1/2 cup = 11g protein) peanut butter (2 tbls = 6g protein) Mozerella string cheese sticks (7g protein) Kashi Crunch cereal (1/2 cup + 1/2 cup milk = 9g protein) For snacks I eat: Edys No Sugar Added Popsickles (Counts as water intake ) Skinny Cow Ice Cream (No Sugar) Blue Bunny Ice Cream Bars (Splenda) SF Jello SF Applesauce Please let us hear from you...I know it would help me out a bunch! Hello!! Not sure if it is a good thing, but it works for me. I eat beef jerky. It is tuff, so that causes me to chew it really well, better than regular meat, and plus it makes me thirsty, which helps me with drinking more water. I especially eat it on days that I am just not hungry, I keep it in my desk, and if I know i'm not eating that day, I take a piece out and eat it a 3-4 times a day. Tracie, Hey that does sound like it would be a good thing, makes you thirsty too! I have never tried beef jerky...I guess I will have to give it a try What is the protein on beef jerky? Thanks, Robin Lap RnY 02/18/04 252~219~120

Man! My husband got some beef jerky not too long ago, and I tried chewing on a little piece. No way could I do that! *LOL* I wish I could, though. I love beef jerky. I have seen so many folks on here talk about eating/drinking protein bars/shakes after they're not on restricted diet anymore, but my surgeon insists we don't do that. Is that just a differing opinion among surgeons? Just curious. Jules

Jules, I guess it all depends on your surgeon. My surgeon recommends the following, which may differ with yours or others on this list. I am just posting it so we can compare. When was your surgery? Week 1: Clear liquids Week 2: Full Liquids Week 3-5: Soft Foods (Protein Oriented) After Week 6: whatever is tolerable (Protein Oriented) 64oz of water a day 50-70 grams of protein a day Robin Lap RnY 02/18/04 252~219~120

I love beef jerkey! Sometimes it sits well with me & well - sometimes it doesn't. I have a bag of Oberto here in front of me (peppered) it has: calories 80 fat 1g carbs 8g sugars 6g Protein 13g - & that is in 1 ounce (1 serving). Susan Maria's site (bariatriceating.com) sells some jerkyhut stuff - it's soooo yummy & more tender. I've been doing well keeping track of all my food & I've been getting in around 105g of protein a day! I couldn't believe it. I do 2 whey fruity protein drinks (26g each), low carb crunch genisoy bar (15g), 2 string cheese (8g each), turkey pepporoni slices (9g), split pea soup (9g per cup). I have to watch the split pea soup though - I love it too much. I seem to have stomach aches all the time & the hot really seems to soothe; however, it has 24g of carbs in each cup serving as well. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to watch the carbs really - my doc never said anything; however, the weight is coming off soooooo slow that I have to figure out what's going on. I also have a page of stuff w/protein info on it. I know that we can't necessarily eat everything on it - but it has some nice suggestions on it. ***Sorry it's so long*** Serving size: protein (grams) Serving size: protein (grams) almonds (1 cup) 26.0 red snapper (3 oz.) 39.0 barley, uncooked (1 cup) 16.5 salami (1 oz.) 6.9 baked beans (½ cup) 8.1 scallops (5-6 med) 39.5 kidney beans (½ cup) 7.2 shrimp (5 lg) 15.5 lima beans (½ cup) 5.4 shrimp, canned (3 oz.) 20.8 bean soup (1 cup) 7.6 baked ham (3 oz.) 26.3 corned beef (3 oz.) 22.9 boiled ham (2 oz.) 14.5 hamburger (3 oz.) 21.8 lamb chop, broiled (4 oz.) 20.2 roast beef (3 oz.) 23.3 lentil soup (1 cup) 5.0 beef pot pie 23.0 beef liver, fried (3 oz.) 13.2 cottage cheese (½ cup) 13.6 calf liver, fried (3 oz.) 15.1 fried chicken (½ breast) 24.7 lobster (1 cup) 19.5 chicken drumstick 12.5 mac & cheese (½ cup) 8.4 chicken, dark (3.5 oz.) 29.3 malted milk (8 oz.) 11.1 chicken, white (3.5 oz.) 32.3 whole milk (1 cup) 8.0 chicken pot pie 23.0 minestrone (1 cup) 5.0 chicken salad (½ cup) 17.4 onion soup (1 cup) 8.1 cocoa from mix (1 cup) 7.0 oyster stew (1 cup) 15.8 corn bread (1 square) 5.0 peanut butter (2 Tbsp) 8.5 cream soups (1 cup) 7.0 pea soup (1 cup) 13.3 custard (½ cup) 7.2 perch (3 oz.) 22.5 egg, boiled 6.3 cheese pizza (1/8 of 14") 9.4 egg, fried 6.7 pork chop (3.5 oz.) 21.4 egg, scrambled 7.1 baked sole (3.5 0z.) 30.0 eggnog (½ cup) 7.0 spareribs (6 average) 14.9 baked flounder (3 oz.) 30.2 broiled trout (3 oz.) 20.3 frankfurter 7.2 water packed tuna (½ cup) 36.4 french toast (1 slice) 5.4 turkey, dark (3.5 oz.) 30.0 haddock (1 fillet) 16.6 turkey, white (3.5 oz.) 32.9 choc. pudding (1 cup) 8.1 yogurt (½ cup) 4.4 ~Amanda

Hey Amanda, I read your profile....We are really close in our weightloss...I was 252 when I had surgery. I think I had lost 19 pounds in a month. I am now almost 7 weeks out and I have lost of total of 32.5. So...hang in there...it does come off...I also started measuring every 2 weeks...that really helps...There were times that I hadnt lost a pound in 5 days or more, yet in measuring, I had lost inches. So far I have lost 19 or so inches. Keep up the good work...I do believe it is slower for us who are considered 'light weights'. Robin Lap RnY 02/18/04 252~219~120

Robin, You're so right about measuring. It makes all the difference when the scale slows down. I've only lost 39 pounds (almost 8 weeks), but I'm down a little over 30" and it really shows. Julie
