What could be wrong?

Hi everyone. I've had absolutely no complications or problems since my 2-17-04 surgery until now. I guess it's not really a complication, but a problem. I drink approximately 60 oz. of water a day. I go to the bathroom once when I get up in the morning, and twice when I get home from work.....that's it! Where could all of this water be going? Before if I would have drank this much water, I would be floating away! The other thing is I ALWAYS have dry mouth. Now, how can I drink that much water and still have dry mouth? I have an appt. to go see my surgeon's nurse on April 1st, so I will ask her what she thinks it might be. I hope it's nothing like a bladder infection, because nothing hurts. Any advice would be great! Thanks for all of your support! Marcia RNY 2-17-04

Marcia, I went back to my paperwork from the hospital. It says a minimum of 64 oz of fluids a day. At week 6 to 8 it says to drink adequate fluids to stay hydrated and urinating 3 to 4 times a day. (same for weeks 9 and out) Are you doing a lot of salt, high sodium foods? Even cheese can cause water retention. If you are eating more carbs, carbs can cause the system to hang on to water too. Definitely worth checking out with the doctor or nurse. Hope you find some answers. Mary

One other thing to add to the last post - caffeine in the form of coffee or tea also retains water, so if you drink any you have to add even more water. I was sort of the same as you and now drink Propel Fitness Water and for some reason it flushes my system better.

My doctor's orders after surgery included that if I constantly had a dry mouth or did not urinate frequently to immediately contact his office. You better call your doctor!

Marcia, I have a similar situation. I drinks LOTS of water with very few trips to the bathroom. Before surgery, I went almost hourly and 3 to 4 times during the night. My doctor said not to worry. I have no painful urinations, so there doesn't seem to be any bladder problems or infections. Still, I think that it warrants a chat with your physician. Good Luck!
