Right sided pain
I'm a little over 6 weeks post op and have, for the past 3 or 4 days, been feeling a dull pain on my right side. I had RnY open surgery. It's not pain medicine type pain, but it is noticable. I notice it most when I'm sitting or lying on my side. When I'm up walking it's not there. Maybe I'm making something out of nothing, but I just wanted to know if anybody else had anything like this. Otherwise I'm doing fine, no other complaints. God bless, Bob.
Hey bud,
You gave me some good advice with the protein shakes, maybe I can help you with this. Hmm...since you had an open RNY, it can't be the right side laproscopic incision like what I have. Many RNYs develop gall stones (and consequently need their gallbladder removed). Six wks seems a bit fast to have started developing those (this would be a higher right side pain around the bottom of your rib cage and it would be a sharp pain), but it IS possible. I wouldn't horse around with this. Contact your surgeon. It's better to be safe than sorry.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Darin; How are you doing? How is your recovery coming? Are you walking and feeling great? My pain has gone and I guess I'll never know what it was. (that's ok with me) I'm back to my writing and have just published my second book. I can't believe my energy level. I'm walking 2 miles everyday.
Say, did you try the peppermints in the protein shake? It sounds like you did. Hope all is well with you. Please let me know how you're doing. Look after yourself, Bob.
Bob, glad to hear your pain is gone. Wow!!! You've published two books!! Inquiring minds have to know; what are they about? You definitely deserve the applause.
My recovery is coming along good; thanks for asking. My stamina is still a bit low, but otherwise I feel really good. I just started exercising this week. Hopefully I'll see an improvement on my stamina soon. And yes, I did try the peppermints in the protein shake. You helped get me through with that tip. I've just got some new protein powders from Nectar (ordered through vitalady.com). They have a juice rather than a creamy shake consistancy. I'm tolerating them MUCH better.
Keep in touch.

Hi Bob:
I get them too, they don't seem bad enough to address but they
do make me think. I also had open RNY and I had a drain on that
side. I wonder if that has anything to do with it (the drain healing.)
If it continues much longer, I'm going to call my surgeon just to be
sure it's nothing.

Eileen; Thanks for replying. I'm happy to report that my phantom pain has disappeared. I guess I'm never going to know just what it was, but I woke up yesterday and it was gone. I didn't have drains post op so I'm really stumped. I just hope your pain is gone by now or goes away shortly. Please let me know how it turns out for you. God bless, Bob.
Hi Bob,
I also had an open RNY on Feb 17th and was wondering if they took your appendix and if that might be what is causing you some pain when you lie down. I had a nasty bruise on my right side where they took the appendix. They also told me that there are internal stitches holding things in place. Maybe you're feeling pulling from that. I agree, that if it is persistant, to call your dr. and just ask. Take good care of yourself!

Marcia; that's a great question. Yunno, after surgery, I asked my doctor if he took my gall bladder, but never thought to ask him about my appendix. The pain has since resolved and I'm just going to count myself lucky. But thanks for the question. When I see him on 4/19/04 at my next check up, I'm going to ask him about my appendix.
How is your recovery coming? Are you having good results? Let me know how you are. God bless, Bob.
