Water just doesn't taste the same, Yuck!
Hi,
I'm new to this site, this is my first posting, Is anyone
else having a difficult time drinking their water. I am
5 weeks post op and I am just coming off of a two week
plateau as a matter of fact I gained a pound over
week 4 and 5. I had started walking during that time
so I'm sure it is muscle weight. But there has been
progress, the last 3 days I have lost 3 pds for a total
of 35. I tried to up my water and protein but I keep
comming up shor****er just doesn't taste good anymore.
I used to drink about 80 oz. a day - pre surgery. I'm only
getting in about 40 oz a day now. My doc wants me to try
to drink pure water not crystal light or flavored liquid.
Anyone else having this problem or have any suggestions.
I also get sick to my stomach from the water.
Thanks for the help,
Eileen
Eileen,
The distaste for water as a post-op seems to be pretty common. I'm lucky that I don't mind it and drink some every day along with other fluids to get my 64 oz in. Here are some suggestions that might be of help:
Herbal tea (its decaf so can count as a fluid)
crystal light
kool-aid made with Splenda
Water flavored with lemon or lime
Water flavored with sugar free syrups (actually pretty good)
Diluted fruit juices (only if your doctor allows them)
Chicken or beef broth (low sodium)
Propel Water
Snow Cones made with sugar free syrup etc.
Welcome to the group and congratulations on your weight loss. You are doing great. I'm still on full fluids for another 1 1/2 weeks as my surgeon requires a minimum of 4 weeks for them.

Hi Eileen,
I just have gotten to the point that I like my water again. I probably don't get my 64 oz. yet. I get close though. Water hurt so bad in the early stages. It just stopped hurting about a week ago, and it was overnight. I did try the SF Tang and Wyler's pink lemonade. I don't like the taste of them anymore, so my children are finishing them up for me. I prefer plain old water. I do have a filter on my fridge, so I think it taste better than tap.
I do have one suggestion that really helped me. I discovered this during week 4. I heat up about 6 oz. of water in the microwave and put lemon juice and one splenda in it, and this helps relax my stomach first thing in the morning. I have a queasy morning sickness feeling first thing in the morning. It is because I have too much mucous. The warm lemon water seems to thin it out and get it moving down. Then I'm able to do my protien drink about an hour later, and then water is so much easier the rest of the day. Good luck, and BTW you have really done well with your weight loss!

Thanks for the suggestions. Heating it up is a great idea.
I'm freezing all the time anyway - except when I'm walking.
The Bariatric support center I use is really strong about not
adding any sweetners to the water, but lemon juice is a
great suggestion. I found in the past when dieting that I
always lost alot more weight when I drank plain water, so I'm
trying to stick with it.

Eileen, I have the same problem and my water tastes heavy or metallic. I used to drink alot. I have begun drinking Fruit 2-0 water from Walgreens and it goes down so much easier. The fruit tastes are very light and the only thing in it is 25 mg sodium. They have peach, raspberry (my favorite) orange, lemon-line, grape, strawberry, etc in 24 ounce bottles.
Just to see if it made a difference, I drank the frui****er one day and regular water the next. Drinking regular water, it took me over 4 hours to drink 24 ounces. With the frui****er, I can drink 24 ounces in 1.5 hours. Since drinking them, I can get to around 100 ounces pretty easily and not feel sick. Last Friday, I actually drank 118 ounces (and spent alot of time in the bathroom )
