SCALES!!!!!!!!!

I bought an analog scale yesterday. I have a digital but it is going to be beaten severely amongst the head and shoulders (for those of you who have no clue what I am talking about, read my profile towards the bottom). So I bring this home and set it to zero. Great. Now I hop on knowing that for once I am going to get a true reading. it said that in the last 3 weeks I have only lost 3 lbs. DAMN! So I figure that it is hibernation mode thanks to Mary who sent me the explaination. Well, I decided to check the scale with an unopened bag of flour. Now I know I should weigh something to test the credibility and this was all I had. Let us assume that the factory is not ripping us off and it does weigh 5 lbs. Well I put it on the scale and it says something like 2 lbs. So I re-calibrate it (ugh). NOW it is set at true zero. I hop on and the thing has the nerve to tell me that I haven't even lost the 3 lbs. I haven't lost a single pound in 3 weeks. Can we say plateau? How does one keep their *****s) up? I hate scales.

Well, who's scales are you going by on the loss? If it is your Dr.'s scales, you need to wear the exact thing you wear when you get weighed in next time, and weigh yourself at home, and do not eat or drink in between the time you leave his office and getting home to weigh. THen calibrate it. I did that. His was three lbs higher because of my clothes. Debbie -25

His said 254 on Feb 23. Mine today, after careful calibration said the same thing. I have not lost anything including inches in 3 weeks. Know how you "feel" when you lose? I haven't felt that in 3 weeks. I have no doubt that there is no loss, that I am on a plateau. Joanne

I may be wrong, but I think to do the true weight test on the scale you need to have something more than 5 lbs. Analog scale is the old fashion type right??? IF yes, set scale to 0. Now weigh yourself. Get off scale and wait a minute. Now hold the 5 lb bag of flour and get on the scale. Is your new wt 5 lbs more than before without the bag of flour? If not, then readjust the weights to calibrate. With a good digital scale, you may have to wait 5 to 10 minutes in between weighing for it to delete/forget the old weight. Sometimes I think it would be better to pack the scales up and not use them, but to judge our improvement by how good we feel. Unfortunately I am addicted to the scale and I know it. At least now I am only weighing in the mornings whereas as a pre-op I was weighing a million times a day because I had a goal that had to be maintained with no gains for my surgery to happen. I was down 15 lbs on Saturday, then yesterday and today gained a lb. I'm still on all liquids and am doing about 300 to 500 calories a day. Following doctor's plan to a T, so hope it is just normal fluctuations. Just frustrating. Mary

Joanne, If you are not getting in enough protein and fluids (very likely if you have a stricture), this will bring on the famine response and intensify it. It will also cause you to retain fluids and thus account for even possibly a weight gain. Starvation will not cause the kind of weightloss you want. You will lose at first then experience exactly what you are seeing. Once they get your pipes open, start pumping in the protein and fluids. You will be amazed at what happens next. Even without a stricture, adding protein and fluid and exercise is a good strategy for fighting stalls. They do happen, but they don't need to last forever! Good luck on your appt tomorrow! Joy

Oh believe me, I do not want, like, or need starvation. I did it years ago and lost 50lbs in 3 months. put it all back plus more. I am curious as to what will happen after the stricture is opened. How soon after the procedure do you think I will be able to eat? Thanks, Joanne
