Hi! do any other recent RNYs have tons of gassy diarrhea? Mine started 2 days post-op in the hospital before I even went on liquids. I thought it was because they kept bringing me sugary stuff, but now I am totally sugar free juices, water, cream of wheat, etc. and the more I drink, the more diarrhea I get. It makes sense to me now that all the liquid and no solid = diarrhea, but in the hospital?? How long will this last? Will it get better once I start solids in a couple months? Also, my pain is not too bad except for a burning pain in my lower left stomach area near the stapler incision. Anyone else experience this??

I had the same pain as you and called my Dr. They said it was because the liver was proped up during surgery and was a little bruised.

Jessica - Actually I don't, but it's very very very soft. But not like niagara falls You may want to check with your surgeon to see if that's common for the way he does his procedure. The procedure is a lot like diabetes - in that each person's mileage varies not only on the individual, but on the surgeon, and also on the diet that's recommended. If it was more distal (more of the small intestine bypassed before it was reconnected) then that might be the reason. I was originally going to check then boards, and just post and say that YAY! I finally had a BM today! (Surgery 2/27 - Friday) lol. Almost like when your firstborn goes the first time... and you go "Oh how cute" as you clean them up and change their diaper. Of course, that's also before they start eating all the 'other' food and things start to get nasty Here's hoping Niagara slows down and returns to normal for you real soon!!! *hugs* Nick

Hi Jessica, I had the same problem a couple days after surgery and I talked to my surgeon and he said it is completely normal and be thankful your not constipated. Think about it if your only eating liquids then only liquids will come out. I had my surgery on the 23 and still have gas but not as bad. So I wouldnt worry to much...Ericka

I had the same thing for about a week after getting out and then it quit. Now I'm the other way having a slower time with it. One thing I made sure I wasn't doing is drinking right after eating. Make sure you wait 30 to 45 minutes after eating before drinking anything. Good Luck.

Hi, Jessica - I had nasty diarrhea start four days post-op. Very nasty. At one point, I told my husband that if this didn't stop, they'd have to build a port-o-let for me outside my office building, if I ever went back to work. (Gee, these hormonal surges are fun, aren't they?) Called the Dr., day five post op and he said it was normal. Continued (but somewhat less****il day 7 (which was yesterday for me!), and called the doctor again. At that point, he said it was ok to try Imodium. One dose, and all was well. I'd recommend that you give your doctor a call. good luck!!! Sherri

Jessica, My surgeon had me do a complete bowel cleansing for two days before surgery. I had my first bm 5 days after surgery when I was already at home. You might want to check with your surgeon, as chronic diahrrea can cause dehydration. Also if you are doing sugar free things are they loaded with sugar alcholols like manitol, malitol, sorbitol etc. These products can cause a severe laxative effect even in small dosages for some people. Hope you feel better soon. Mary

I hope you are feeling better. I just had surgery on February 25 and a couple days ago I realized my problem was that I was drinking sugar free liquid and it seems that the artificial sweetener was causing the diarrhea. I have stopped the artificial sweeteners for now and am drinking more bottled water. I now feel better! So just a though****ch out for the artificial sweeteners. linda

Hi Jessica... I am 1 month post-op and my bowels are still loose...From what I understand this lasts for awhile...When I started taking my iron my bowels kinda changed a little and are still loose but not as bad...I had my gallbladder taken out about 3 years ago and I know after that happened I never had a solid bowel movement since....I think this just continued on after the surgery....If you are really concerned please call your dr. cause you never know what could be going on.......Helen
