I am due to have surgery on Wednesday 2/25/04 and I have been gaining a little weight before surgery. Is this normal? Could it be because I am nervous? I'ts only a few pounds but I dont want them to be disapointed with me before I go in for surgery... Has anyone else had this problem?

Dear Gaining, I quit smoking a year before my surgery because it took so long for my insurance to approve my wls. I gained over 50lbs. before I had my surgery and probably gained a few more eating what I called my last meals. I don't know if anyone else did the same as me and had these last meals but if you do that then you will just have more weight to lose. So yes someone other than yourself has had the gaining weight part but it was my fault, I chose to keep eating and now I've got a lot more to lose. But I'm losing, which is what counts !!!! Good luck to you... You will do great.............

Yes I did the same thing I ate foods I would have never touch before because I knew they would cause me to gain weight. But for once in my life I could eat something and not feel guilty afterwards. I think alot of people do it. I decided to have Surgery in 10/ 2003 and I go in for surgery 2/23/04 and have put on 15 pounds in that 4 months. LOL Tracy in Hudson

Hi Wendy- First off, I just want to wish you all the luck. I am 1 week and 1 day post op and feeling better each day. As for the weight gain, it is normal. Everyone I spoke to before I had the surgery told me they gained about 10lbs in the last month from eating all their last meals... . You are doing fine. I gained about 5 lbs and have already lost 16lbs since the surgery. I wouldn't suggest gaining too much weight but a few pounds at this point won't matter. If you have any other questions please e-mail me. Erica

thanks so much for that information... Is there anything I should be prepared for that they didn't tell you about the surgery? I have heard some horror stories but mostly that you dont really remember the stay in the hospital.....

Wendy.....we are WLS sisters!!! my surgery is too scheduled for Wed the 25th. Hold off the weight as much as you can, Monday eat very light and Tues is clear liquids ONLY! Hopefully those two days will pass quickly and you will feel better when you get to the hospital and weigh in! I'm here for you....we will be great!!! God Bless you Jeanie

I have the same question. I just went for my pre-op yesterday and had gained like 5 pounds. Was wondering if this is due to nerves? It seems like most of the postings I have read, this seems to be a pattern for everyone. Good Luck to you. Please think about me on Friday the 27th as that is when my surgery is. Thank You Laurie

Wendy, Don't worry about gaining a few pounds. I am 11 days post op and also gained a few (3) before surgery. I'm sure this was due to the "last meals" that everyone has mentioned here. Don't let a few pounds concern you. Even a "normal" persons weight fluctuates somewhat. Just make sure you follow all your doc's orders for your diet in the days just before surgery. It seems all docs tell you something different, but they tell you to do what works best for you and for them to make the surgery go easier. Good luck on your special day.
