Topic: RE: What are you drinking?

That's a very different protocol than my clinic.  I had RNY on 1/19 and was on clear liquids until 1/23, when I started the Stage 1 bariatric diet, which is 2-3 protein shakes a day (25-30 g protein each) plus lots of clear liquids.  I started Stage 2 yesterday, which is 2 protein shakes a day plus 2-3 very small meals of pureed foods.  We're supposed to get 60-70 g of protein a day.  The nutritionist said that since we're eating so little right now, we need to get most of our protein from the shakes.  The pureed food doesn't have to be high protein (applesauce is fine) but it can't be high carb.  I'll move to stage 3 (regular food) in about 2 weeks.

Your body really needs protein to heal well, so I'm surprised they'd have you drink Carnation Instant Breakfast, which I think only has about 5 g per shake.  It wouldn't hurt to invest in some protein powder and have a high protein shake every day.  There are varieties that have very low (even zero) carbs and that are sugar free.  I use Nectar, which I bought at a specialty nutrition store, but you can get it at Walmart too.

Hope that helps!

Congrats to you guys on being post-op...I hope to be there in a few months, too. (God willing!)

I have it in my head that I'm gonna want pureéd chicken with a little bbq sauce in it (with some warm water, too, so it's not dry)...and I think the same about an occassional lean cut of beef (steak) with a little steak sauce pureéd up in there with it?

I will ask my NUT when I get in to see her for our consult, but I was wondering what you guys thought of it.

Also, I know it's very import to avoid fats, high calories, and such....but I wonder if we can't stand the taste of low fat or ff mayo...if we only use mayo sparingly, is that ever okay?

Hope to hear from you guys...

Julie

I start pureed on tuesday- 8 days after surgery.  I have the magic bullet and it is great for blending smoothies.  Also I was told to cut meat up fine and add some liquid to it as well, I was told I could do scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, tuna w/ light or FF mayo- really anything that I dont have to chew.  Good Luck!

Topic: surgery on 27th- how are u doing?
I had surgery on the 27th. I'm doing good. Have had some gas and some pain, but feeling pretty good other than that. I think I pushed myself too much last night trying to get in all my protein and fluids because I felt like I was about to bust. Stomach was hurting this morn, but thank God for liquid vicodin. I'm feeling good now. Just wondered how everyone else is feeling? Congrats to all of the January Newbies! I'm sooooo excited for us!! Also, FYI , Premier Nutrition Chocolate protein from Costco IS GREAT and cheap!!! You can get 18 per case for abt $24. No aftertaste, GREAT TASTE!!! Can't wait to hear how everyone else is doing.

Topic: RE: Isopur, anyone tried it?
I've tried Isopure Alpine Punch and Blue Raspberry. I didn't like the Blue Raspberry AT ALL!! It left a bad aftertaste in my mouth. However, the Alpine Punch wasn't bad at all. Also a really good protein shake that tastes great and is cheap is Premier Nutrition -chocolate. You can get it at Costco. A case of 18 is about $24. They are great!!! No aftertaste at all. It tastes like chocolate milk. Hope all went well with your surgery. Mine was on the 27th. So i'm looking forward to moving to the next stage of soft foods also. Hang in there!

Well, I had my surgery on Jan. 18, 2010 by Dr. Reardon at The Methodist Hospital.  All went very well, I came home the next day, and praise the Lord, so far no problems.  All this has been a very long battle for me, but so far I am glad I have done it.

I am down about 15 pounds in 11 days, so that is pretty good, at least I think it is.

I am thankful for this forum.

Oh NO! I'm stuck in the airport - flights been delayed twice already - bad storms in the middle of the US.  Might not get out today and may have to reschedule!  Boo!  Sitting here after 3 days of liquids trying to siphon off the broth of a bowl of chicken noodle soup while everyone around me is eating burgers and french fries and all kinds of yummy stuff !
