Topic: Help! I Need Some Encouragment...
Hi All,
After having my surgery on 1/12 and being discharged 3 days later with no complications (or so I thought), on Sunday my husband rushed me to the ER due to excessive pain in my abdomen and dehydration. I couldn't drink anything, it was like the more I drank, the bigger my tummy grew. My stomach looked like I was 5 mos pregnant; the pain was excruciating.
The doc told me that I had an ileus which basically means my bowels went to sleep and never woke up. So they had to rehydrate me intravenously, gave me a pain pump with delautid and eventually a suppository. I was finally discharged Wednesday this week. I feel better this time then when I was originally discharged from the hospital.
I'm not going to lie, it's been a hard road with my reflux acting up at night and trying to figure out just how much isn't too much. Right now, my stomach feels like I did too many crunches. My hubby says that I need to stay positive and to remember that it's barely been 2 wks since I had my surgery. Granted, I've lost about 12 lbs since the surgery but I wish I knew how hard this first stage was going to be.
I purchased some organic juices with no sugar and the liquid protein (42g - 3 oz) but I'm still having a hard time getting up to the 60g requirement. Whenever I drink, it seems like a very slow progression and my reflux is not making it any easier. The doc has me on Previcid (twice/day).
I'd appreciate any suggestions and encouragement to help get me thru this phase.
Thanks in advance.

Karen,
As long as your repeat CXR was clear of pneumonia and you don't have a fever, you should be OK. Be SURE to use the incentive spirometer every hour in the hospital, and also do the coughing/deep breathing (even though it will hurt). Get up and walk as soon as you can.
Good Luck on your surgery!

Rita,
I agree with Barb's advice- the diet instructions and examples leave a lot to the imagination. I think you have to work out a schedule that works for your body, trying to stay within the surgeon's guidelines. I ate a lot of sugar-free/fat-free pudding and cream soups (strained) the first 2 weeks home. You can't go wrong with sugar-free jello or popsickles, either. I drank several ounces of fluid every 30 minutes while I was awake- I was always sipping on something! I got in my protein requirement from the start using protein shakes, which count as fluid, too.
It sounds as if you did great in surgery and I hope that you have an uneventful recovery. It sounds as if your fiance is supportive, which will be a big help for you. Don't be hard on yourself- you have been thinking about this for a LONG time, and I'm sure that you did a lot of research and really wanted it. We're all nervous before surgery- some more than others. I don't think that your regrets now are all that unusual, either. It's just concern and fear of the unknown. Hopefully, as time goes on and you heal and start to lose weight, you will feel more confident in your decision.

I'm glad that you're home and doing well. I'm glad that your computer is "better", also. Stay in touch so we know how you're doing!

Charlotte,
Welcome Home! Get plenty of rest over the next few days, and you'll be feeling a little better each day. It's a good feeling to have it all over with and to be home, isn't it? I know how you feel about having side effects from the medications- I had problems, too. Welcome to the Loser's Bench!

Topic: RE: Has anyone made it to the gym yet?
I was cleared to walk on the treadmill (max. speed 2.5 MPH, no incline) but haven't started yet. I plan to do it tomorrow, for sure. Take it slow and easy!

Barb,
This really hasn't been so bad, has it? I read so many horror stories that I just didn't know what to expect, and I am so happy at how this is turning out. I bought some unflavored Unjury to add to soups, applesauce, pudding, etc. but haven/t tried it yet- I'm kind of funny about the textures of foods... I don't mind boosting with the protein shakes for now.
Keep up the good work!
