Susan,

Each surgeon is different but normally they want you to do 6 to 8 small "meals" of thicker liquids per day.  You should start with 1/4 cup and work toward 1/2 cup.  Optimally, they would like you to get in 64 oz of water in a day, but I had my surgery on 1/08/09 and just now can drink 8oz in between meals.  I would urge your friend to call her dr to make sure she is following his/her protocol..  Also from what I've read a good indicater that a person is becoming dehydrated is when their urine is darker in color than usual.

I hope these things help.

OH Family,
Whew, I am 22 hours from my revision to the DS. I cannot believe it is finally here. My surgery is 8AM Thursday. I am so grateful for this second chance. If prayer is a part of your personal habit please please please remember me. My surgery is open and I have a huge hernia...a gift from my failed VBG. My surgeon is not going to close the wound. He is going to do a wound vac. Kccruisercats is my angel. She will post to the boards my progress.Another OH member  mjk39 is opening her home to me this evening. Her mom will accompany us to the hospital and stay with me during my surgery. OH is a wonderful community. The level of love and compassion is unsurpassed. I will be in the St. Francis Hospital in Topeka KS. As soon as I am able I will be back on. Anyone who takes the time to pray or send goodwill will be greatly appreciated. I am a widow and my children live in a different state. OH, thank you for being my family. I am so very grateful. Everyone move over. Make room on the losers bench for me. I am going to rock this DS!!!!

As of yesterday, I was able to drink 3ozs of shake, 3xs a day and 48ozs of water. Today I start soft and mushy so I don't know what I'm in for. So far I've had 2ozs of tuna and about 8ozs of water. Hope that helps.

Found out that cottage cheese (at least the store brand) doesn't work for me. It tastes funny so I didn't try anymore becaue of the factor. My doc also suggested tuna mixed with a small amount of light mayo to start my soft and mushy day. It took me 45min (really too long) but I managed to get in 2ozs and am pleased to announce it stayed down.
I'm going to try sardines for lunch and have the rest of my tuna for dinner. Total protein from that 45 gms. Plus a shake +25 gms. That gives me 70 for the day. Fingers crossed.

How much is everyone here able to drink?  How OFTEN are you drinking?  What amounts are you able to tolerate?  A good friend of mine had their surgery 1/20/09 and is only having 30cc's of protein shake 3 times a day.  The rest of the day they are sipping on water.  I am afraid that they are going to become sick and dehydrated.  Please help with providing me feedback!  This friend is very important to me and I am WORRIED.

Thanks for the info !!

I'll have to look into the different flavors of the Muscle Milk.  I love the chocolate ones but would be nice to have a switch every now and again. The ones my friend got for me were the already mixed ones in the little boxes. Although they are a bit pricey compared to the powder mix.... they are convenient (and good)

Thanks Again

I had to chew too.
Night time is the hardest time.
I got a big bag of ice from Sonic and put a bunch in a cup and chewed on that
during the night. It was crunchy and it took awhile to get through the cup.

Just a suggestion.
