Protein shakes

Hi all......

After reading a lot of the posts about the liquid diets and the protein shakes being somewhat unpleasant I thought I would share this little tid bit of info.

Prior to going in for my surgery, my husband (who is getting the band on 2-11-09) and I tried a lot of different protein shakes. We first tried a wide variety of the powdered protein shake mixes which he didn't mind but I found to be gritty no matter how well you mixed them. I could only tolerate the powdered vanilla mixes because I could add different things to it such as flavored extracts to give it a different twist.

A friend of mine gave me a few of the pre made protein shakes that she had purchased at Costco for her husband. Of course these are much more expensive than the powder mixes, but I found them to be fairly good.

  Muscle Milk Light - 8.5 oz - 160 cal.
                                20 g protein - 3 g Sugar  - 9 g carbs (zero lactose)

Premier Nutrition Protein Shake -  11 oz.  -  160 cal.
                                30g Protein  -  1 g sugar  - 5 g carbs

I took them both to our nutritional doc for her to look over and she really liked them. She even said she liked them better than the mixes they had been selling through her office.

They are both chocolate flavored (I don't know if they come in other flavors) and they are thick and creamy. (not gritty) The Muscle Milk Light is very sweet compared to the Premier Nutrition shake but both are very good. Again, they are pricey but well worth the extra cost.  I was always one who loved chocolate milk and these come close to the real thing but are healthy and good for those of us on the losers bench.

Hope some of you find this helpful with your liquid diet/protein shake phase.

Take care and hope everyone is doing well

I have posted about muscle milk several times b4.
It DOES come in a ton of flavors.
It also comes pre-mixed in bottle and in little cardboard drink boxes (not as good though)
I have found that mixing it with super cold water is the best.

At Christmas time GNC had the huge tubs in a 3 pack and it was only $35.

Thanks for the info !!

I'll have to look into the different flavors of the Muscle Milk.  I love the chocolate ones but would be nice to have a switch every now and again. The ones my friend got for me were the already mixed ones in the little boxes. Although they are a bit pricey compared to the powder mix.... they are convenient (and good)

Thanks Again

The Muscle Milk Light flavors are all good!!! I have had them.  I'm currently waiting for my order from GNC of the Muscle Milk Light in CAKE BATTER FLAVOR!!! I can't wait to try it.
