no pre-diet??

I was wondering I have been reading alot on here where some of the doctors require a liquid diet before surgery. Mine does not I am just NPO at midnite the nite before. What is the reason for a liquid diet before hand? and if it is important why don't all doc require it then? Just wondering, I am eating light  the nite before reguardless.

Hi I just had surgery Jan 2nd my dr had me do pre-op diet to help shrink the liver if you have a big liver I know my surgeon wont doi the surgery.The tool they use has to beable to hold it up.

For myself I just really watched what I ate and I still lost 91/2 pounds befor surgery.

I was told the same thing as Jennifer. That when a person is overweight, so is the liver and they want to shrink it as much as possible before the surgery.  Also, any weight you can lose pre-op makes recovery that much easier. My doctor told me I would lose about 10 pounds on the pre-op liquid diet.

Each surgeon and program is different. So it just depends on what works for your surgeon.

OMG! I have been posting about this all weekend! I am on the Medifast shakes for 2 weeks! They are horrible! I have to have 5 a day. I can also have tea, coffee and water! WHAT! I am going to DIE! Or lose so much weight I wont need the surgery afterall! My surgery is next Monday and I am already looking forward to broth and SF jello! I have lost 11 lbs so far. 
How do some get to be so lucky???
I also have to do MOM and fleet enemas  everynite for 3 nites leading up to surgery day! What! After all these Medifast shakes there is going to be nothing solid in my system at all!

Yep for shrinking the liver.  Do you have to do a bowel prep?  I have to do citrate of magnesium, a tantalizing lemon flavor.  They try to make it look like soda pop!  LOL, I can hardly wait.  I just had to do a bowel prep for my colonoscopy when I also had my endoscopy.  Geez, at least it isn't a gallon of stuff!  LOL

 I don't have to do a liquid diet, but I think I am gonna try it for a week anyway. I was reading on here that a lady had the same stomach problem as me (90% into my chest) and that they tried doing her surgery the lap. way but ended up having to open her up...... yikes I DO NOT want that to happen!!!  If I don't get to write u before the 7th, I wanted to say Good Luck!! I was given no strict specific pre-op diet either.

They said to not have fast food, sweets and to up your protein before surgery...but nothing like a full liquid diet.    This is a bariatric center of excellent in Indy. 

I think I WILL do it with just the protein shakes (which \I actually like...Isopure fruit punch mixed with cherrylimeaid crystal light) for 1 week or 2 before though.

You know in the morning I did my protien shake with 3 oz fruit in it
Lunch I ate subway or yogart and pice string cheese
dinner I ate what I made the meat and vegies only  jus****ched what I ate and I went in lossing 9 # but the day befor I had the nasty bowl cleaning thing.Good Luck1

And this was with Christmas in there and My sons Birthday and New Years !

As of yet I have not been instructed to start a liquid diet.  However, I do see my surgeon and the NUT for the first time.  I'm scheduled for RNY 1/20.  Even saw my surgeon yesterday during lunch with my Subway bag.
