Sheda, that was a good question about the gum.  My surgeon has a strict no gum policy. No gum for life....in case you swallow it. It will plug up your stoma and have to be surgically removed. I have never been a gum chewer so I don't have to worry about this, but I know it is a big concern for a lot of people. I would work on giving up the gum.

Sheda Girl, give up the gum, it'll cause you more problems than a little bit. My surgeon has a strict no gum policy as well. Just let it go! I know it'll be hard but you can do it.

Sheda,

Hey we're gonna be surgi sisters!  I am on the 8th too.  Please know that you ar not alone, I am nervous too.  I am ok with being put out, but like you I don't want to see the OR.  One thing the anesthesiologist said was that I could bring my ipod with me and I think that might help settle me down.  I am more worried that I won't be able to get in all my water, I will be sick, I won't like the protein drinks etc. after surgery.  I know I will be successful but nevertheless it's a huge life change.

I too have a habit of swallowing gum, but knowing that I have really been avoiding it.  I don't really need it, so it's not like I HAVE to have it.

So hang in there and we'll get through this together ok?

Hello Sheda, I am having my surgery on the 7th and yeah to say i am nervous is an understatement, I think I have worried myself into an ulcer LOL. I too am a BIG gum chewer since I quit smoking 11mos ago so I will have to ask about that I never even thought anything about that, but I never swallow mine I always spit mine out. But good luck to you and to all of us starting out the new year of 2009on the right path.
Hugs :) Jan

Sheda,
I'm not as nervous about the surgery itself as I am about how I'll feel afterwards. Not  the pain, because they have medicine for that. I'm nervous that I'll feel sick and nauseated all the time and that I won't be able to tolerate anything. I absolutely hate to feel nausea. Don't worry about the OR being too cold- they should give you those nice heated blankets before you go in!!

As for the gum, I guess that you're not the odd woman out about swallowing it- several others posted here that they do, also. I have never swallowed my gum, and I am a big chewer. That is one thing that I may cheat on post-op, since I would never swallow it, it should not do any harm. I'll ask the surgeon to be sure that's the only reason, of course!

Good Luck with your surgery- these next few days are going to fly by.
