Gastric Sleeve January 6th
Happy Chanukah (Day 3), Merry Christmas, Blessed Solstice, Happy Kwanza and Good Festivus!
I just wanted to wish everyone the best and celebrate getting the news that I am approved for the Gastric Sleeve. Surgery set for Jan 6 -- Epiphany -- I will never see these year end holidays the same way. My surgery will be at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore with Dr. Christina Li.
I am 50 year, 10 months and 1 day old! Have an almost 17 year old daughter and am in the process of getting my business as a Certified Public Accountant of the ground (after25 years in financial services...you've heard the news...)
My BMI is below and I have sleep apnea, hypothyroidism (my thyroid was removed last May), diabetes, hypertension, bad knees (arthritis), spinal stenosis, asthma and lots of allergies! I could live with all of that, but the increasing problems with my liver were the final thing that brought me to deciding on bariatric surgery.
My gastroenterologist and endocrinologist independently suggested the surgery on the same day -- with my gastro pointing out that my liver was going into Non-Alcoholic Steaotohepatitis (NASH) which could become cirrhosis and that I would need to lose a lot of weight, probably with surgery, before I would considered for a transplant. Spare livers are really hard get, so I've decided to keep the one I have! At least two studies show significant improvement in liver condition following bariatric surgery.
I look forward to becoming a good, contributing part of this community.
Happy Holidays and the Blessings of Peace and Good Health to all!!

Maria, your story sounds a lot like mine. I have diabetes, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, chronic pain syndrome, sciatica, Gerd, Nash, and a number of other problems. I have my pre-op visit on Jan 6 the same as your surgery date. Congrats on making the decision to save your life. I know I am happy about my decision as well. I am sure you will do woderfully.
