Hello i am new here and i want to say i really like this website, it has informed me of many things pre-op and post-op. My surgery is on January 5th!! But i have been reading on the message boards that you have to lose weight right before surgery or be on some kind of diet two weeks prior to surgery?? Is this true for everyone because i wasnt told to do anything different until the day of surgery..........thanks

some surgeons require that you lose weight prior to surgery because it shrinks your liver making the procedure a bit easier...but some surgeons dont require you to lose weight.but i believe you are not allowed to gain weight. ask your surgeon about it...but there is nothing wrong with trying to lose a bit before surgery... hope that helps and i hope all goes well with you on surgery day. your one day ahead of me

Not all surgeons require that you lose weight pre-op. As far as I know, mine doesn't require pr-op weight loss, but he does require a 2 week liquid diet first and that is to shrink your liver to make the surgery easier.
HOpe this helps.

If you were not given any specifce instrustions then i would not worry about it. If you are concerend then give ur surgeons office a quick call and ask them.

I found this on another web-site.
I hope this helps!

Pre-Bariatric Surgery Weight Loss Program~ Enhance Your Success

Benefits of Presurgical Weight Loss

Australian researchers have shown that patients who participate in a full meal replacement diet for just two weeks before bariatric surgery reduce the size and fragility of their livers and improve their blood sugar levels. These changes improve the surgeon's ability to see the operative area, reduce the risk of intra-operative bleeding and complications, and improve the surgical outcome.

In addition to the preceding benefits, patients who participate in a comprehensive, full meal replacement program for longer than two weeks have the opportunity to develop many of the skills they will need in order to adopt new strategies of healthful eating and dealing with emotions after bariatric surgery.

Researchers at a major surgery center in Michigan found the average weight loss for people participating in a 6-8 week full meal replacement formula diet prior to bariatric surgery was 40-70 pounds.  Individuals who were unable to secure insurance coverage to pay for their surgery remained on the program and lost considerably more weight.

Losing even a small amount of weight before undergoing bariatric surgery can increase your odds of a successful procedure.

Many surgeons and/or insurance companies currently require patients seeking bariatric surgery to participate in a meal replacement weight loss program before undergoing bariatric surgery.
