I was told that I had to lose also.  My Dr requires I go on HMR 800 ( a meal replacement shake) 5x per day and nothing else but clear liquids for the two weeks prior to surgery.  The 5 shakes per day will be about 800 calories!  That should do it.

Does anyone know WHY we arae told to lose weight priot to surgery?  My DR says it is because it helps shrink our liver (cleansing out the fatty tissue,) but I think its more than that.....

January 2nd cannot get here soon enough!!!!!!

Hey Charlie....

I found this on another web-site.
I hope this helps!

Pre-Bariatric Surgery Weight Loss Program~ Enhance Your Success

Benefits of Presurgical Weight Loss

Australian researchers have shown that patients who participate in a full meal replacement diet for just two weeks before bariatric surgery reduce the size and fragility of their livers and improve their blood sugar levels. These changes improve the surgeon's ability to see the operative area, reduce the risk of intra-operative bleeding and complications, and improve the surgical outcome.

In addition to the preceding benefits, patients who participate in a comprehensive, full meal replacement program for longer than two weeks have the opportunity to develop many of the skills they will need in order to adopt new strategies of healthful eating and dealing with emotions after bariatric surgery.

Researchers at a major surgery center in Michigan found the average weight loss for people participating in a 6-8 week full meal replacement formula diet prior to bariatric surgery was 40-70 pounds.  Individuals who were unable to secure insurance coverage to pay for their surgery remained on the program and lost considerably more weight.

Losing even a small amount of weight before undergoing bariatric surgery can increase your odds of a successful procedure.

Many surgeons and/or insurance companies currently require patients seeking bariatric surgery to participate in a meal replacement weight loss program before undergoing bariatric surgery.
