Got a call from the bariatric coordinator today.  Turns out I don't qualify for surgery because my health insurance company requires a BMI of 40+ for two years or more.  (There are other qualifications, but I don't meet any of them.)

The "problem" is that I went in for a visit in January of 2007.  I had just found out my Dad had cancer and I had lost a couple of pounds.  My BMI was 39.9 that day.  THAT is why I am being disqualified.  Wow.  I didn't have another visit until September 2007 (and BMI was back up over 40), so I would qualify for surgery in September of 2009.  I wonder if I will have to go through all of this again?!

Of course I'm disappointed, and it's all still sinking in.  But I'm also wondering... why did I have to waste ALL that time off of work, insurance co-pays, etc. when this is something they should have caught while initially looking at my health history?  Is it normal for something to be overlooked for so long?  It's been four months since I started this process!

On a positive note, I've decided to just continue what I'm doing now, stay off the sodas, be aware of what I'm eating, get more exercise, etc.  Eventually these pounds will have to come off!  I WILL BE VICTORIOUS!

OH HONEY....I'M SO SORRY!!

Well...mistakes do happen.  Any chance you can get "an exception to the rule" and have them
re-try to submit your info?

Are you going to try for Sept? Keep doing what your doing and see if you can get something in Sept.  Sept. is not that far away. The more weight you lose b4 surgery the better off you will be.
( does that make you feel any better? )

I'm so sorry.

If your BMI was 39.9 I would appeal the decision. Your dr probably though because it was 1/10 off they would approve it. Don't lie down, appeal it.
YOu have every right to do that. You can prove a history of obesity. What other factors were they wanting that caused you to NOT qualify?

I agree with Emily- appeal their decision right away!  Do you have a BMI > 40 before you went in for the 1/07 visit? That would prove a history of BMI > 40. Either way, I would appeal, as 39.9 is close enough, especially when you explain the situation with your father being ill. Good Luck!
