Topic: RE: To tell or not to tell?!!
that's a hard one, anneke! i think it's individual--on you and the people you would tell.
this is a great place for support. (isn't it good to have a place without judgment?) and maybe you could tell a few friends who know how hard life is?
for my part, i'm a talker and have told just about everyone i know. it comes with just a few draw backs. the biggest one is from my boss who says i should just join weigh****chers because there are people there who are even bigger than me.
i wish you well, and hope that you keep trying to find the support you need!

Topic: RE: No liquid diet??
i'm having lap band on 1/15 and am on the liquid diet. the surgeon requires it because he wants my liver to shrink. he says that if it has shrunk a bit, my liver will be easier to move out of the way when he places the band.
maybe you should call your doctor?
the liquid diet is not fun, but i'm learning some things that are making it easier: boosting the flavor with sugar free/fat free syrup (like used in an espresso stand to flavor coffee), and thickening it with sugar free/fat free pudding powder. both of those help quite a lot.
because of the high protein/low carb combo, the liquid diet is dynamite for kick starting weight loss! i've lost more than 10 pounds already and i've been on it for 5 days.
good luck and keep in touch!

Congrats! you will do great. Just wait a cople weeks out you will be so pleased you did this. God Bless. Keep in touch.
Topic: RE: No liquid diet??
I had RNY on 12/11 and my doctor did not require the liquid diet either, just clear liquids the day before surgery. I think it just depends on your surgeon.
Topic: RE: No liquid diet??
I am having RNY but I don't have to do a liquid diet. As far as I know my doctor doesn't make anyone do it.
Topic: RE: Jealousy!
Thanks for all the great responses! Wow! I was thinking it would be better to just go ahead and admit that I'm having surgery rather than be all "Star Jones" about it. I'm going to be losing weight right off the bat and I know folks will wonder how I'm doing it. I just hope my recovery goes smoothly and that adjusting won't depress me. I've been using food as a substitute for a social life, so I'm interested to see how I will handle the transition.
Thing about letting people know is that you get the strangest reactions from people you would never have expected...
But I guess it's like online dating - for a while it was weird and taboo, but now it's the norm. Looks like WLS is turning into a viable option for those of us who need a little extra help. I'm so grateful to have this option.

Now that surgery is two weeks away I have told my parents, sister about it. Mum is typical mum and worried and concerned as she wold be for any major surgery and that is OK. Sister was awful and does not talk about surgery but abuse to my own body as i will be removing part of a healthy stomach. It has made me hesitant to share with more people but as the date comes nearer I am wondering if it is right. My husband and kids are very supportive and I know I need support. But most of all positive and encouraging support, if I spend more time 'educating' and put on the defense maybe it is better to keep quiet about it all. So proud and be out or keeping it all private- how are you all handling this? Anneke

All the best for the January 2008ers... Happy New you Year- anneke

I know what ya'll are talking about! My husband is totally saying this is "the easy way out". But he's 6'0 and 180 soaking wet. If I ate like him, I'd be even bigger than I am! However, I'm getting my Lap-Band on Friday and I'm going to do this right. I've spent too long too heavy. However, I as well lost sleep, mulling over all the options--that's totally normal since this is a big deal.
I've not been shy telling folks--I assume they'll see me lighter soon and I won't try to act like "I've just been watching what I eat". Most of my family has kept their opinions to themselves. Guess they realize all the surgical risks are tiny compared to the risks of being obese!
Hang tough! Your determination is admirable.
