Hi Erin, my name is Linda. I had my surgery on Jan 3rd. Prior to surgery, I chose to replace my breakfast with a protein shake. Some are powdery and some are instantized. I ordered my protein online as I did not want to walk into one of those places where the buff people hang out. Oh, and I wanted to read about the kinds of protein that would be healthy for me. I say replace breakfast because I often would leave with nothing in my stomach and five or more hours later seize something. Or my darling husband would get me what he thought I might enjoy. From a jelly stick cake donut to yummy yet high calorie fruit squares. I told him in May that my doctor said I was pre-diabetic and I needed to cut out those foods. He did not seem to hear well, cause one day when he went up for groceries, he went off the list (a verbal list ) and he bought two pies. Go figure! He is a darling but sometimes I wonder if men just do not listen. I did not have any trouble making the switch to low calorie protein shakes even though the one I ordered was so powdery, and gaggy with 1% milk. I could mix it in food before it simmered but have not. I chose the next day to mix it with diet juice and add water to the juice to further cut the low sugars. I mixed full juices with this portion one quarter juice, three quarters water. I could drink these down fast and race out to the waiting car. Then, I began to experiment with adding frozen fruits, and yogurt. I love yogurt! So, what I am telling you is to experiment add stuff, blend it well! I have to tell you that the frozen raspberries that did not bother me pre-op scared me post op when I realized how many seeds were in the 1/4 cup of raspberries. Oh, and if you have a little sieve use it. My friend talked to me last year about her need to lose weight. Only five pounds! She put bananas in the freezer and would chose to use them as a freeze pop at night when she was hungry. That gave me an idea. I froze three bananas that I had not managed to eat pre-op. You have to wait until they are ripe. I hope you do well. I was not on a liquid diet but pureed or blended since leaving the hospital. I like the Pacific Foods Carrot Cashew and Ginger soup. It has a terrific taste. I was told not to worry about protein for the first four weeks. I think that every surgeon and nutritionist have their own take on how to proceed post op for a good recovery. I have seen many that require a pre-op liquid diet of two weeks. Imagine that...my surgery was right after New Year's.

Hello, Carla: This morning, I tried heating up egg beaters in the microwave as a friend had suggested by spraying the cup with Pam. I do not know the exact time to cook it so I kept taking out the solid part and putting the setting to a few seconds at a time. I found the egg filled me up. I had cooked 3 ounces liquid yet it swelled up so much. I could only eat about 6 bites. I still had to bite even with scrambled eggs, and make sure it went down tiny. I had to burp after that last bite. I put another bite in and thought NO, so I did not swallow that bite. I have beano and took that before the operation because I had been taking the alli pills with my lunch and supper since 8 '07. I also had been taking Prilosec for more than a year in the morning. I think that all the fiber I tried to get in with the Fibersure caused me to be gassy! I think it is expected that we are going to be more gassy than pre-srugery. I for one do not like that prospect at all. I had takenone Benefiber chewables once a da for a couple of days as I seemed too gassy and wanted production not flare! Let me know how you are doing. I live in Marlborough MA and am home alone while my husband is off working. I had been busy all morning, cleaning and preparing foods for later. I only put on the computer because a friend of my youngest daughter called and I wanted to see which email address my daughter had been using. I seem to get really involved with checking posts on OH. Or cleaning up. As my personality goes, I would rather be out and about then home cleaning. I tend to get too much, and keep too much. I know that is true of a lot of people. I am adjusting to not being home. I had very few at home days last year! If I wasn't working, I was traveling. I am looking forward to a trip to a small island where I have been going on mission trips. I have made many friends there. I have not sat down to write some letters as I promised myself I would do. I have been journaling in this nice winged cherub bound book that cost just two dollars from Ocean State Job Lot. I am writing the various foods that I eat with the times and ounces in a day planner along with my comments. I am 20 days since the operation. I have been blending my food, and eating some baby foods. If you look at my blog you will see some issues I have had. I still feel full from the egg beaters and the broth I drank. I cannot believe it is so late. I spent time scrubbing to get in some exersize as an arm toner. I read the green notebook again for the important information about the blended diet. I found the page from my PCP doctor that I had asked to see my weight tracked from the visits over the years. I am still higher than I was in October '97, and today I am four and and a half pounds near the one hundred pound weight loss since my highest weight on April '06. One thing I want to do during this time of recuperation is get more disciplined. A lasting discipline. I am used to short bursts of energy, or segmented discipline for an event or project. At sixty with some issues with arthritis, a job injury, sleep apnea, and being overweight I have continued to do as much as I can. I do not ever see myself as an athlete. I walk for enjoyment to visit a museum or when traveling. I do not look forward to a treadmill. So, that is something I have to discipline myself to do. I have many different interests than my husband. I pursue them on my own and do not expect him to go along. Yet, some say, Is Bobby going when I tell them I am going on yet another mission trip? Now, though for both our health, and well being I want him to go along with exercizing.

I am still on liquids (I'm a week out) and I have noticed if I have too big of a drink or drink too fast I have to burp. Once I do that I feel better. I know that doesn't help since I still am not on soft foods but just as an I'm with ya.

Linda, Thanks for taking the time to write. As I said, I tried Bean-o yesterday, and I believe it helped. I took some this morning before my egg. I can't eat a whole egg because I feel so full. How far into your post-op are you?

I have been feeling terrific. I think my apartment will be the cleanest it has been since before we moved in. I have been giving away lots of clothes to charity as I no longer need them. I also decided to find what I had not used in the 5 years we have lived here that is just taking up unpaid storage space. If it was good condition, it was donated also. I was making a change, and changing my living area helps. I gave away to my eldest daughters food stuff that they can use. Tomorrow, I will go through my paper clutter. I may spend time reading old cards and enjoying them more than cleaning. So, what are you doing with your time at home? In preparation or post surgery? I am sixty years old, married, and taking six weeks off from work. I am told I cannot travel out of state. I would love to. I often would be gone for three or more weeks from work. So, many people are used to me being away. My husband works at the same place and says people ask about me. He says some are asking several times since he went back. I had told some but we have a large post office where I am just one of a hundred letter carriers.

We were told in our long pre-op session, and it is in the informational notebook that we should purchase Gas X. I could have used it a few times when I thought my pouch was just saying full. I forgot I had it on Monday when I used Tabasco sauce on the scrambled eggs I was served. It was the only part of the meal I could eat. I generally could tolerate spicy before the surgery.

Topic: RE: I'm home!
I was so glad to get home. I had not slept well in the hospital. I napped and was ready to go outside and to church. But reason got the better of me, and my husband would have had to drive. He was glad to get back where he could nap when he wanted to also. He deserved the week off with me. He went into work on the following Saturday to get a break he joked. I was told that fluid retention from all the IVs could last a couple of weeks. My surgeon said he wanted me to add salt to my soups, and water for now to keep hydrated. He said to add to the point that it tastes too salty. I have sleep apnea and my mouth gets so dry at night. I began to bring a bottle of water to sip when I woke. I wake often. Speaking of rings, one that I put on today to dress up while shopping is swinging around my finger. I had gained so much weight I had to have my wedding ring cut from my finger. I will never forget that experience. It was not painful though it took some time to cut. It was disturbing to me. Another time, I realized how heavy I was when the toilet made noises and I thought it was going to fall. I found out later that one of the medium build women at work sat down and it fell. She actually works in maintenance. All over England, when we had to go find a lou as they call them it would be way up the stairs or down down down. Most of the the bathrooms were particularily small. I have bad knees and just the journey to the bathroom was a major accomplishment. I could not even go in the bathroom on the charter bus. Heck, I would have had the door open! Add to this the bladder was being compromised by me being over 150 or more pounds overweight! I was lucky that I made it.
