Odd question, probably, but I am curious.  I don't appear to be able to vomit since my surgery.

Hey, Belle...I think I can, if you mean throwing up spontaneously. But, to be honest, since surgery I've only had to a couple of times and I had to make it happen, if you know what I mean?
However, I don't seem to be able to burp or to cough with any force at all. It's quite strange some of the things that change.

Hmmmm...  I am very curious about this.  I cannot even make myself throw up.  Although I can burp on command, but I actually had to learn how to do it! lol!  Air gets trapped really easily in my pouch if I eat too quickly, and it is amazing how a good burp will cause instant relief!

Thanks for responding...  I have tried to research this online and have found nothing about it.

I checked into the vagus nerve response on Wiki, and there is a section that talks about lesions on the nerve causing lack of gag reflex (last section in the article). Perhaps this is the same phenomenon happening with regard to surgery. Do you know if your surgeon cuts your vagus nerve, or leaves it in tact?

I'm dying to know about this too.  I have thrown up 2 times since surgery and both times were because I ate WAY too much, too fast and poor choices.  There have been atleast 10 times that I have eaten something that disagreed with me and felt like I was going to throw-up and so tried to help myself along and just could not do it at all.
I'm gonna ask my Dr about the Vegas nerve thing if I get a chance...

hmmm I haven't had to throw up and haven't tried to, so I don't know. Have you wanted to vomit because of an upset stomach?

Hey Belle:  I can't throw up either...I remember hearing someone talking about it on the boards right after I had surgery and being the curious george that I am...I had to try it to see if I could and lo and behold...I could not vomit even when I tried to make my self.  I did ask my surgeon about it and he was like " why would you want to throw up"  I think he may have thought I wanted to be bulimic or something..but Iam way too cheap for that..if I pay for it, I will not be throwing it up and wasting money..I will just not eat before I eat and throw it up. LOL And I don't have to tell you I am not skipping meals either...hence the weight regain.

So any way..my surgeon did not really answer my question but I did ask and I explained to him I had read on line that ppl who had rny could not vomit after surgery and I was  wanting to know why......Keep us posted on what you find out.

Hmmm...  well, I am definitely going to ask my surgeon.  I know that I cannot throw up, even when I have tried to force myself.  I'll let you know what I find out.

OMG, I have totally been plagued with this as well, for the longest time after surgery I was throwing up all the time, so much my daughter would keep count, but now for some time I cannot even make myself throw up, sometimes I wish I could, I wish I knew what was going on too.  I thought I was just wierd, I didn't know anyone else had this too!
