Do you take an additional iron supplement besides your multi?  If so- what kind and how much of it?  Where did you get it?

I have my iron infusion scheduled for Friday morning and then I see the Hematologist on Tuesday.  The triplets don't have school on Friday- my MIL is watching them which is really cool cuz my appt is from 6:45-1:15.  They ran it much faster last time- but we didn't get any results- so I'm back to the long one.  Guess I'll be napping, reading and watching a DVD.  Is it bad that I actually kind of enjoy the break?  I mean- other than the IV- it's a nice comfy chair!!!  This one will be a little too long though.
Thanks-
Brit

Hi Brit -
I take a prescription iron pill everyday besides a multi vitamin and b-12.  I have my Dr. refill the rx every 3 months.
My dr. also told me to take the iron pill w/ vitamin C - it helps make the absorbtion in our bodies better. i don't drink orange juice ( haven't since surgery) i take a chewable sugarfree vitamin C pill.
Good luck w/ your infusion...

Brit - I take an iron pill 2 x a week because my iron was a tad low. Good luck with your infusion. So, let me get this right, you're not take any extra iron other than what's in your mult vitamin?

This is what I take 2 x a week Iron Tablets 65 mb Elemental Iron - Iron Supplemental Therapy. I'm not sure why, but I was told to not take the iron with my calium pills and also to drink it w/ OJ.

Good luck Brit - OMG you are like me, I do not even mind going to the dentist or gyn beacuse I consider it a break from the twins. lol! Let us know how it goes.

Iron and calcium are molecularly attracted to one another. So, if taken near each other and before they have had a chance to absorb, they will bind together and are then impossible for the body to utilitze. Iron does, however, become more bio-available when taken orally with vitamin C (asorbic acid)...therefore the oj or a vitamin C supplement.
How's that for a *nursey* answer?

On no- I take an RX iron pill everyday- but I hate them cuz they constipate me- that's whay I was so happy to find those digestive health probiotics food.
I am just hoping that the hematologist will get my iron levels to norm and then I can stop the prescription one and go to an over the counter one and just wanted to know what everyone else was taking.
Thanks-

I take 18mg of ferrous fumerate twice per week...my levels are normal high so I don't really need much. Good luck with your infusion.
I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who likes errands or appointments because it's a good excuse to get away from the kids. It almost feels naughty to go to a doctors visist

Suz and Janie-
I am so glad to hear that you can appreciate appointments too!!!  I wondered after I wrote it if it sounded too terrible... :)
I rented from our library- Miss Pettigrew lives for a day and the Hunting Party, and I'll take a book too. :)

Hey Brit:

I take a prescription iron pill as well, hemocyte f tablets once a day.  Before surgery I was always alitte anemic and it is about the same now.  The tablets have helped and my iron levels are just at the normal range.

And I don't think it is bad that you enjoy the break.  May as well since you have to be there so long!  Hope all went well for you on Friday and that things go okay with the hematologist on Tuesday.  Take care

Steph

I have not been on the site forever - it was good to see you are all here and doing so well!

I was not taking extra iron at all. Don't think I was ever told too.  Anyway, the last few months have felt rather lathargic and not much energy despite regular vitamin, healthy energy drinks and exercise.

After my blood work last week the Doc office called and put me on a one-month Rx called Repliva that I take for 28 days and then get retested.

BTW - before I found out about the iron I went in for a B-12 shot, which I had not been doing either so I thought the lack of energy was due to that.  I broke out horribly - has this happened to anyone else?  I researched that is could be a common thing after the B-12.  Lots of little "pustales" on my face - yuck!
