Carbonated drinks
I tried one sip of diet Pepsi...YUCK!!! I didn't really care for it before surgery...but now it just really tastes like a cup full of chemicals. I did have a few sips of sparkling apple cider at Christmas and on New Years...did fine on Christmas, but on NY it made the pouchy hurt. I still miss the idea of a Pepsi One...that used to be my fave.
I tolerate well and allow myself to have them on the weekends. I get the 100 Calorie size of real coke and I usually have one on Saturday and one on Sunday. Usually once a week, I do allow myself a small one from Sonic.
The thing is that I usually don't ever even drink all of it. I poor it and half goes to wast because it turns into watered down soda. I think it's just the idea of not telling myself no.
I don't crave them near as bad as I did before surgery. Instead, Iced Tea has replaced them almost completely. I get a 32 oz iced tea at lunch every day. I don't drink with my meals still, but about an hour later, I start sipping on the tea. I do really well with it and find that keeps me away from the carbonated drink cravings.
I do still get my water in too, but probably not as much as I should. I think it's great you made it this far out without having one. Best of luck and I hope I didn't encourage you to go for it, but just gave you the honest truth about how it's worked for me.
Hugs,
Lindy
Hi Lori -
I have to say that I have not had soda/carbonated drinks in 1 year. I did try a sip here and there and it was just too gassy and bubbly for me and didn't feel so great on the tummy. I can honestly say that I don't even crave them at all, which is a shocker to me because I lived on diet coke b/4 surgery. I drink alot of diet ice tea (arizona green tea), diet cranberry juice and water and coffee. I still don't get in enough water, but I was never a big water drinker b/4 either.

Hi Sweetie!
I have honestly been terrified to try them. I got to my high weight with the help of Dr. Peppers and have read that diet drinks inhibit weight loss and promote weight around the middle. I haven't had a sip in a year. I have tried sugar and found that I don't dump, so I don't want to even entertain the possibility that I could drink them. I am afraid that would sabotage my hard work of this past year because I know a few sips would lead to an addiction. Be careful with them.
Hugs,
Caters
I must confess I have been drinking diet Pepsi for quite some time and this is why. After surgery I had to be scoped 3 times because my surgery site kept closing and my pouch was shrinking. I was told by a friend to try Pepsi because if you drink it your pouch will stretch. So it made sense to me if I need my pouch stretched I should try Pepsi. and it worked when I am not able to eat much I have a diet Pepsi and by the next day I can eat again I can eat one taco from taco bell and thats all only about 1/2 cup of food at a meal. when it goes down to just a couple of bites before my pouch hurts I have Pepsi and then the next day I can eat my 1/2 cup of food. I still loose weight like crazy. the soda does slow it down for about a week so I would not recommend it. all I know it works for me and keeps me from being scoped.
Somedays I can, somdays I cant... After surgery the only thing I ever missed was carbonation. I still miss it. I will buy a bottle pop and it will last me 2 days... I usually let it get a little flat first or put alot of ice in it. Somedays it just makes my tummy feel yucky.
Try it... I think you will be surprised how different it is... I dont get the same out of it like I use to before surgery.
My doctor (who had RNY himself) says that it will NOT stretch the pouch, that everything you hear about it is a myth. They discourage it cause it can make your pouch uncomfortable, some people get gassy from it.
I am really shocked at some people saying they havent tried it. Am I the only one that has tried just about anything? My doctor was big on NOT being on a diet... its a choice of a lifetime and he wants his patients to live as normal lives as you can, That's my rule of thumb.
Good luck!!
Stacey
I totally agree with the idea of not being on a diet! I can and do eat just about anything...unfortunately that includes way too much chocolate! There are things that no longer appeal to me, like pork for some bizarre reason, and there are things that don't taste good anymore, like soda. But, overall, I think that anything goes in moderation...I wanted to live like a "normal" person and that is what most people see in me. Besides, at this point, everything is such a habit that I am just not used to drinking sodas, so it's not even that they don't sit well or the surgeon says no...I just don't think about them anymore! But, I say, if you want it and it fits into your eating plan overall...go for it!
I've had a few sodas in the past year. Before surgery, I lived on Diet Pepsi Vanilla. Now, I don't even really like the taste of it. If I go to a restaurant, sometimes I order a Diet Pepsi, but never finish more than half of it. The only soda I can drink much of is Diet 7up. But, none of it is very appealing anymore. It's so strange to me that something that I was so addicted to before surgery is so unappealing now.
